Add security contact information to your Microsoft account

When you make sensitive changes to your account, we need to send you a security code to make sure that you are the person initiating the changes. We send the security code to a phone number or email address that you previously provided. The phone number and email address are known as security contact information. Only one contact method is required, but we strongly encourage you to include both an email address and a phone number in case you later lose access to one or the other.

Add security contact information

To add new security contact information to your Microsoft account, follow these steps:

  1. Sign in using your Microsoft account email address and password.
  2. Under Account, select Security & password.

  1. You may be asked to have us send a security code to one of your existing security contact methods. Check your phone or email for the code and enter it where instructed.
  2. Select Add a new email address or Add a new phone number. Then, follow the directions provided.
  3. Do one of the following:
    • If you added an email address, check that email address for an email from Microsoft. There is a code in the email. Enter that code in the box provided. This confirms we have the right email address.
    • If you added a phone number, a code is sent to your phone. Enter that code in the box provided to complete the setup process.

Note You must complete this step for the phone number or email address to be valid for use as security contact information.

You'll also receive a notification sent to your existing security contact email address or phone number. This is a precaution in case someone else made the change. If that happens, you can cancel the change by clicking the link in the notification.

If you no longer have access to your current security contact information

You'll need to remove and replace the outdated information if you can’t access any of the phone numbers or email addresses used as security contacts. See Update your Microsoft account security contact information for Xbox Live to learn how. The old information will be removed, and the new information will be activated in 30 days. This allows you to stop a removal in the event that you regain access to the previous information or that you did not initiate the change.

Don’t worry, you can continue to use Xbox Live and make purchases on the console during the 30-day waiting period as long as you know your password and can sign in to the console.

Add security information during sign-up

You are asked to add security contact information when you create a new Microsoft account. You'll have a few days to enter the security code that you receive in email or by text to your phone. This verifies your information. However, we recommend you do this right away to prevent an interruption in play.
