Add security contact information to your Microsoft account

Whenever sensitive changes are made to your account, we need to send you a security code to verify that you are the person initiating the changes. The security code is sent to a phone number or email address that you previously provided. The phone number and email address are known as security contact information. Only one contact method is required, but we strongly encourage you to include both an email address and a phone number in case you later lose access to one or the other.

Add security contact information

To add new security contact information to your Microsoft account, follow these steps:

  1. Sign in using your Microsoft account email address and password.
  2. Under Account, select Security & password.
  3. You may be asked to have us send a security code to one of your existing security contact methods. Check your phone or email for the code and enter it where instructed.
  4. Select either Add a new email address or Add a new phone number and follow the directions provided.
  5. Do one of the following:
    • If you added an email address, check that email address for a email from Microsoft. Enter the code in the email in the box provided to confirm we have the right email address.
    • If you added a phone number, a code will be sent to your phone. Enter the code in the box provided to complete the setup process.

Note You must complete this step for your phone number or email address to be valid for use as security contact information.

You will also receive a notification sent to your existing security contact email address or phone number. This is a precaution in case the changes were made by someone else. If that happens, you can cancel the change by clicking the link in the notification.

If you no longer have access to your current security contact information

If you can’t access any of the phone numbers or email addresses used as security contract methods, you’ll need to remove the outdated information and replace it. See Update your Microsoft account security proofs for Xbox Live to learn how. The old information will be removed, and the new information will be activated in 30 days. The allows you to stop a removal in the event that you regain access to the previous information or that you did not initiate the change.

Don’t worry, as long as you know your password and can sign in on the console, you can continue to use Xbox Live services and make purchases on the console during the 30-day waiting period.

Add security information during sign-up

When you create a new Microsoft account you are asked to add security contact information. You will have a few days to verify your information by returning the security code that you receive in email or via text. However, we recommend you take care of it right away to prevent an interruption in play.
