An app or device doesn't prompt you for a security code

I turned on two-step verification. How do I sign in to an app or device that doesn’t prompt for security codes?

Some apps (like the mail apps on some smartphones) or devices (like Xbox consoles) can't prompt you to enter a security code when you try to sign in. If you get an incorrect-password error with an app or device, you'll need to create a unique app password to sign in.

After you sign in with your app password, you're all set to use that app or device. You will use this new app password to sign in to your device instead of using your Microsoft account password.

You'll need to create and sign in with an app password once for each app or device that can't prompt you for a security code.

  1. Sign in to your Microsoft account.
  2. Under Account, select Security & password.

  1. If you're prompted for a security code, follow the steps to get the security code, and then enter it when you’re prompted.
  2. Under App passwords, tap or click Create a new app password.

  • A new app password is generated and appears on your screen.
  1. On your Xbox console, when you are prompted for your Microsoft account password, enter the app password that was displayed on the screen.

Alternatively, using an authenticator app on a smartphone is the fastest way to verify your identity. To do this:

  1. Sign in to your Microsoft account.
  2. Select Security & password.
  3. Under Identity verification apps, tap or click Set up.
  4. Select the mobile device that you want to install the app on.
  5. Follow the instruction to install the Microsoft’s authenticator app and pair the app with your Microsoft account. Enter the verification code and tap or click Next once pairing is completed.
  6. On your Xbox console, when you are prompted to enter the security code after entering the Microsoft account password, enter the code that is generator by the authenticator app on your smartphone.
