More about Kinect sensor placement

Solutions

Correct Kinect sensor placement will get you the best body tracking and speech recognition performance. Here are some tips:

Position the Kinect sensor at the correct height

A Kinect sensor is mounted just above a TV and centered. A check mark is next to the image. A Kinect sensor is position on the floor in front of a TV on a stand. A red 'X' is next to the image.

The sensor works best when it is positioned somewhere between 2 feet (0.6 m) and 6 feet (1.8 m) off the floor. Ideally, the sensor should be within 6 inches (15 cm) above or below your TV.

Note In smaller rooms, try to position the sensor as close to 6 feet (1.8m) as possible.

Center the Kinect sensor horizontally

A Kinect sensor is mounted just above the center of a TV. A check mark is next to the image. A Kinect sensor is positioned near the lower-right corner of a TV. A red 'X' is next to the image.

Although the sensor will work if it is positioned on either side of your TV, it will work best if you center it.

Do not position the Kinect sensor near a speaker, or on a vibrating surface

A Kinect sensor is centered just below a TV and equidistant between two stereo speakers. A check mark is next to the image. A Kinect sensor is perched on top of one of two speakers situated on both sides of a TV. A red 'X' is next to the image.

Place your sensor at least 1ft (.3 m) from any speaker. At louder TV volumes, you may need to have up to 3 feet (.9 m) or more between the sensor and any speaker.

Do not place your sensor on your console, other electronic equipment, or anything that vibrates.

Position the Kinect sensor near the edge of a flat, stable surface

A Kinect sensor showing a green LED is positioned near the front edge of a cabinet. A check mark is next to the image. A Kinect sensor showing a red LED is positioned some distance back from the front edge of a cabinet. A red 'X' is next to the image.

The sensor cannot see your feet if it is positioned too far back.

Position the Kinect sensor so it can move freely

A Kinect sensor is positioned in front of a TV on a cabinet that has glass doors. A check mark is next to the image. A Kinect sensor is positioned inside of a TV cabinet that has glass doors. A red 'X' is next to the image.

Do not position the sensor behind cabinet doors (even glass doors) or on a narrow shelf.

Position the sensor in a place where it can tilt and automatically adjust.

If there is a piece of packing foam between the base of the sensor and the sensor head, remove the foam.
