Troubleshoot DVDs on your Xbox 360 console

Can’t play a DVD or getting a disc read error?

Try the following solutions:

Solution 1: Clean your disc
  1. Hold the disc by the edges without touching the top or bottom surfaces.
  2. Using a soft, clean, slightly damp cloth, lightly wipe from the center of the disc outward.
  3. Once the disc is clean, load the disc into your console and see if the disc plays.

If the DVD still does not play, try the next solution.

Solution 2: Check the DVD region and format

Make sure that the DVD region matches the region of your Xbox 360 console. Look for the region code on the disc or DVD packaging. For example, if you purchased an Xbox 360 console in the United States, Canada, or a U.S. territory, the console will play Region 1 DVD discs or discs coded for all regions.

For information about disc formats and regions, please see Supported regions, formats, and discs.

If the DVD's region and your Xbox console's region match, try the next solution.

Solution 3: Try another disc

Try other discs to determine whether the problem happens with any DVD or only with this particular

If more than one DVD will not play:

  1. Make sure the DVD region matches your console region (Solution 2, above).
  2. Contact Xbox Support. See the Assistance information at the bottom of this page.

If only one DVD will not play:

  1. Try to play the DVD in a different DVD player or console to make sure the disc is not defective.
  2. If you can’t play the DVD in another player, there might be a problem with the disc. Contact the disc manufacturer or retail outlet for a replacement disc.

If the problem only happens when you play the DVD in your Xbox 360 console, try the next solution.

Solution 4: Update your console software

Try updating your console software. Learn how to update your console software.
