Error "The correct ports cannot be opened" occurs when using Windows Media Center Extender on Xbox 360

You see the following error message when you finish installing the Windows Media Center Extender setup program:

Xbox 360 Setup is Finished. The correct ports cannot be opened

This may mean that the Windows Firewall is turned off on your computer.

Solution

During Windows Media Center Extender setup, Windows Firewall has to be updated to allow communication between the Windows Media Center-based computer and the Xbox 360 console. If the Windows Firewall service has been stopped, these updates can't occur, and the Windows Media Center Extender setup program won't install.
