You see the following error message when you try to install a program for the Xbox 360 Media Center Extender on Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 with Service Pack 3 (SP3):
There is a problem with the installation of Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005. Uninstall the update to Media Center Edition 2005 and then re-install the update from the Windows Update website. Then run the Xbox 360 Setup again.
This issue may occur if an entry is missing from the registry. When you install a program for the Xbox 360 Media Center Extender, the program checks for the registry entry. If the registry key is missing, the program is not installed.
Note This issue does not occur if the following conditions are true:

To resolve this issue, try one of the following solutions.
Solution 1: Update Windows XP Media Center Edition
To resolve this issue, install the Update for Windows XP (KB895961) package. Then try to install the program again.
Solution 2: Remove Windows XP SP3 temporarily
To temporarily uninstall Windows XP SP3, follow these steps on the computer that is running Windows XP Media Center Edition:
Solution 3: Add the registry entry
To automatically fix this problem, run the automatic Fix it file. To do this, click Run in the File Download dialog box. Then follow the steps in the wizard.
- This wizard may be in English only. However, the automatic fix also works for other language versions of Windows.
- If you are not on the computer that has the problem, save the Fix it solution to a flash drive or a CD. Then run it on the computer that has the problem.
Important This solution contains steps that tell you how to modify the registry. However, serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly. Therefore, make sure that you follow these steps carefully. For added protection, back up the registry before you modify it. Then you can restore the registry if a problem occurs.
