Xbox 360 console turns off unexpectedly

Overview

The Xbox 360 console can unexpectedly turn off under the following circumstances:

  • The Auto-Off setting is enabled, and the console has been inactive for six hours.
  • The console is too hot.
  • There is a problem with the power supply.

Troubleshooting

Solution 1: Make sure the Auto-Off setting is disabled
  1. Start the Xbox 360 console without a disc in the disc tray.
  2. Go to the Settings hub and select System.
  3. Select Console Settings, and then select Startup and Shutdown.
  4. Highlight Auto-Off, and then do one of the following:
    • If the Auto-Off setting is “Disabled,” go to step 5.
    • If the Auto-Off setting is “Enabled”:
      1. Select Auto-Off, and then select Disable.
      2. Go to step 5.
  5. Turn off the console. Wait about 10 minutes.
  6. Turn on the console.

If the problem still occurs, note how long the console was on before it shut down, and then do one of the following:

Original Xbox 360 console
  • If two lights are flashing around the power button, go to solution 2.
  • If the console just turns off and there is no indicator light illuminated around the power button, go to solution 3.
Xbox 360 S console Solution 2: Let the console cool down

Note If you have an Xbox 360 S console, first wait for the red light to stop flashing.

  1. Turn off the console.
  2. Wait at least one hour.
  3. Turn on the console.

Important Make sure your console is in a cool, well-ventilated place. Remove any objects on, under, or right next to the console.

If the problem still occurs, request a repair.

Solution 3: Check the power supply light

Solid green or solid orange light: Your power supply is working. If your console won’t turn on, try the Xbox No Power Solution.

Flashing orange, solid red, or no light: Your power supply may need to be replaced. Try the following solutions:

  1. Try plugging your console’s power supply into a different electrical outlet. Do not use a surge protector.
  2. If the power supply light is solid red or flashing orange, unplug the power supply and let it cool for 30 minutes. Then, plug the power supply back into the outlet.

Replace the power supply

If your power supply light is still flashing orange or solid red or is unlit, your power supply needs to be replaced. You can order a replacement Xbox 360 power supply from the Xbox Online Service Center. Console registration is required to replace the power supply under warranty (the power supply warranty is the same as your console warranty).
