Xbox 360 console error codes

Symptoms

If there's a hardware problem with your Xbox 360 console, your TV might display an error message with a three-character code such as System Error E74. If this happens, find the error code in the following table to find out what to do.

E01 – E63, E65 Use our Flashing Lights Solution. Choose one flashing light as the problem and follow the steps in the solution. Try the following steps:
  1. Disconnect and reconnect all accessories.
  2. Remove the hard drive.
  3. Remove any USB flash drives.

If these steps do not solve the issue, request a repair.
E64 Your console needs to be repaired. Your console needs to be repaired.
E66 Your console needs to be repaired. Your console needs to be repaired.
E68, E69 Use our Flashing Lights Solution. Choose one flashing light as the problem and follow the steps in the solution. Try the following steps:
  1. Disconnect and reconnect all accessories.
  2. Remove the hard drive.
  3. Remove any USB flash drives.
  4. If the system error message does not display with the hard drive removed, your hard drive may be experiencing a hardware failure. Order a new Xbox 360 Hard Drive from our Xbox Online Service Center (sign in with your Windows Live ID). Console registration is required to replace a hard drive under warranty.

If the above steps don't solve the issue, request a repair.
E70, E71, E73 Use our Flashing Lights Solution. Choose one flashing light as the problem and follow the steps in the solution. Try the following steps:
  1. Disconnect and reconnect all accessories.
  2. Remove the hard drive.
  3. Remove any USB flash drives.

If the above steps do not solve the issue, request a repair.
E74 Your console needs to be repaired. Your console needs to be repaired.
E75 – E99 Use our Flashing Lights Solution. Choose one flashing light as the problem and follow the steps in the solution.. Try the following steps:
  1. Disconnect and reconnect all accessories.
  2. Remove the hard drive.
  3. Remove any USB flash drives.

If the above steps do not solve the issue, request a repair.

Disc read errors

Messages What to do
  • This disc is unreadable.
  • To play the disc, put it in an Xbox 360 console
  • Unrecognized disc
  • “Reading” and then . . . “Open tray”
