Manage your Xbox 360 game library

This page describes how to acquire and manage games on your Xbox 360 console.

Get games from the Xbox Games Store

You can browse the Xbox Games Store and add games to your console's download queue. The next time your console connects to Xbox Live, the items in your download queue will start downloading.

  1. Visit the Xbox Games Store.
  2. Click or tap Xbox 360 Games.
  3. Browse games by selecting a genre under Genre or by rating under Game Rating. Or, search by using the Search tool and typing a specific game title.
  4. Click or tap the game title that you want.
  5. Click or tap the link to buy or download the game or add-in.
  6. Follow the instructions to purchase the game or add-on.

Acquire games through your console

  1. You can also get games directly through your Xbox 360 console. On your console, sign in to Xbox Live.
  2. Go to games, and then select Browse Games or Search Games.
  3. Browse or search for the game, add-on, or game demo game you want, and then select the item that you want to download.
  4. Select Confirm Download.

If you can't download your game, see Troubleshoot Xbox 360 connection to Xbox Live.

If you still have a problem downloading your game, contact Xbox Support.

  2. Select the game you want to play.

Install a game from disc

  4. Press X on your controller.
  5. Select Install. If prompted, select the storage device you want to install the game to.

A progress indicator appears while the game is being installed to your hard drive. Installing a game to your hard drive can take up to 12 minutes.

Notes
  • Installing a game to your hard drive requires between 4 and 8 gigabytes (GB) of free disc space.
  • After installing a game on your hard drive, you still need to have the game disc in the disc drive when you start the game.
  • Installing games on your hard drive improves load times and minimizes game disc access.
  • Original Xbox games can't be installed on an Xbox 360 Hard Drive.
