You’re prompted to apply a required update for a game or app

What to do if you are prompted to apply an update

When you start a game or app, you may see this message:

Update Required

An update is available for this game from Xbox Live.

Do you want to apply this update now?

Updates to Xbox games and apps download to your Xbox console. Generally, updates are fix bugs, add features, or prepare for new content from Xbox Live.

If an update is available, you receive a prompt to install it as soon as you start the game or app on your Xbox Live-connected console. Most updates are fairly small and install automatically within a few minutes.

Note To update the game or app, your Xbox console must be connected to the Internet and to Xbox Live. If you don’t have access to Xbox Live, you can use the game or app offline, but you can’t update it.

To check the current status of the Xbox Live service, see Service status.

Solution 1: Make sure you can connect to Xbox Live
  1. Press the Guide button on your controller, go to Settings, and then select System Settings.
  2. Select Network Settings.
  3. Select Wired Network or the name of your wireless network, if you are prompted to do so.
  4. Select Test Xbox Live Connection.
  1. Select Yes if you are prompted to update the console software.

If you receive a connection error, try using the Xbox Live Connect Solution.

Solution 2: Clear your system cache
  1. Press the Guide button on your controller.
  2. Go to Settings and select System Settings.
  3. Select Storage or Memory.
  4. Highlight any storage device, and then press Y on your controller. (It doesn't matter which storage device you select; the cache will be cleared for all storage devices.)
  5. Select Clear System Cache.
  6. When you are prompted to confirm storage device maintenance, select Yes.
Solution 3: Delete and reinstall the game

You might be able to correct problems related to downloading a game update by deleting the game from your console and then installing it again.

If you’ve installed the game on your hard drive, you will have to install it again after you delete it. If you purchased the game from Xbox Live, you’ll have to download the game again after you delete it. Don't worry, you won’t be charged again for a game you’ve already purchased. For information about how to download content that you‘ve already purchased, see View your Xbox Live download history.

Warning When you delete a game, saved game information is also deleted. So, before you delete a game, copy your saved games to an Xbox 360 Memory Unit or a USB flash drive. For information about how to copy content to a storage device, see Copy, move, or delete Xbox saved games, profiles and avatar items.

  1. From the Xbox Dashboard, go to settings and select System.
  2. Select Storage, and then select Memory Unit.
  3. Select Games and Apps.
  4. Find and select the game you want to delete.
  5. Select Delete.
  6. Download the game:

    • If the you downloaded the game from Xbox Live:

      1. Go to settings and select Account.
      2. Select Download History.
      3. Browse your download history. Select the item, and then select Download Again.
      4. Note If you want to see the charges on your Xbox Live account, see Check your Xbox Live billing and download history.

    • If you originally installed the game from a disc, install the game again.

  7. Copy the saved game information (if you saved it) from your memory unit or USB flash drive back to your Xbox 360 hard drive.
  8. Start the game, and then download the update again when you are prompted to do so.
Solution 4: Try a direct modem connection

If your Xbox 360 console connects to the Internet through a router or gateway (as opposed to directly through a modem), try connecting the console directly to the modem. Here's how:

  1. Plug one end of a network cable into the back of your Xbox 360 console and the other end into your modem.
  2. On the console, sign in to Xbox Live and start the game.
  3. Choose to download the game update.

If you can download game updates when the Xbox 360 console is connected directly to the modem but otherwise you can’t, there might be a problem with your router or gateway configuration. Contact the manufacturer of your router or gateway for help troubleshooting this problem.

If you still can’t download a game update when you’re using a direct modem connection, and you’ve tried all the other solutions listed above, contact your Internet service provider (ISP) for help.
