Using the Kinect audio tuner

The Kinect audio tuner tests the background noise, speaker volume, microphone calibration, and ability of Kinect to hear you in your gaming environment. You can also turn the chat microphone on and off from the Kinect audio tuner. Below is a description of these features, along with suggestions for correcting any problems that the Kinect audio tuner discovers.

Background Noise

In this test, Kinect listens to the background noise level. If there is too much background noise, try the following:

  • Turn down all other audio devices.
  • Ask people in the room to stay quiet.
  • Move Kinect away from vibration sources such as computers, DVD players, audio speakers, and game systems.
  • Move Kinect away from noise sources such as open windows, fans, and air ducts.

Speaker Volume

In this test, Kinect plays a sound and listens to your speakers. If the speaker volume is too low, turn it up and try again.

Microphone Calibration

In this test, Kinect measures the sound picked up by the microphone from each speaker individually and combined. This test allows Kinect to listen to you and ignore the sound from games and videos.

  1. Silence any background noises.
  2. Set the volume to the highest that you normally use to play games or watch TV.
  3. Stand or sit where you play games or watch TV.
  4. Remain silent, and listen for two tone passes.
  5. If the volume is too low, turn it up and try again.

Speech Levels

  • Select Begin Speaking, and repeat the text in a clear voice.
  • Move closer to Kinect.
