Use Kinect voice commands

Control your console using Kinect voice recognition

With Kinect voice recognition, you can control your Xbox 360 console. To use Kinect voice commands, start by saying the word “Xbox.” When you say “Xbox,” a microphone appears at the bottom of the screen.

After you say the word, “Xbox,” you can say any word or phrase that appears on the screen to open that item.

For example, you can say “Xbox open tray” to open the disc drive.

Xbox Kinect voice commands list

Here are some things you can say to Kinect:

If you want to… Say this...
Go to the Home screen "Xbox go Home"
Play a disc "Xbox play disc"
Go to a Dashboard area such as Social or Games "Xbox Social" or "Xbox Games"
Conduct a search via Bing “Xbox Bing …” and say what you want to search for
Note Bing voice search is currently available only in English in the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom.
Open or close the disc tray "Xbox open tray" or "Xbox close tray"
Turn off the console "Xbox Settings," "turn off," and then "yes"

You can use the following voice commands while watching videos or listening to music using apps such as Xbox music:

If you want to… Say this...
Fast forward a video "Xbox fast-forward"
Rewind a video "Xbox rewind"
Pause music or video "Xbox pause"
Play music or video "Xbox play"
Skip forward "Xbox next"
Skip back "Xbox previous"

For example, if you are watching a movie using Zune video, say "Xbox fast forward" to move forward through the movie. Say "Faster" to move more quickly through the movie. When you get to the part of the movie you want to see, say "Play."

Notes

  • Individual Kinect games might support voice commands. To find out if a particular game supports voice commands, refer to the game manual or on-screen tips while playing the game.
  • Voice commands are not available:
    • While watching videos from My Videos or Windows Media Center
    • While listening to music from My Music
    • When playing movies or music from a disc
