Fix Xbox 360 console problems

Overview

Try the following steps if you’re having a problem with your Xbox 360 console:

  1. Turn the console off and on.
  2. Unplug all power cords and accessories, and then plug them back in firmly. Make sure all connections are secure.
  3. Update your console software.
  4. Clear the system cache.

Common solutions

Flashing lights or E74 error (original Xbox 360 console)

Red light on Xbox 360 S console

There is a solid red light on my console and the screen is blank.

Try the following steps:

  1. Let the power supply cool for about 30 minutes.
  2. Plug the power supply into a different wall outlet.
  3. Disconnect and reconnect all accessories.
  4. Check the power supply.
  5. Remove the hard drive.
  6. If the above steps don’t solve the issue, order a replacement power supply from the Xbox Online Service Center.

There is a flashing red light on my console and I get the error: The Xbox 360 is shutting down to protect the console from insufficient ventilation.

Try the following steps:

  1. Let the console cool down.
  2. Relocate the console.
  3. If the above steps don’t solve the issue, request a repair.

There is a solid red light on my console and I get this error: System Error

Try the following steps:

  1. Disconnect and reconnect all accessories.
  2. Remove the hard drive. If the system error message doesn’t appear when the hard drive is removed, you can order a replacement Xbox 360 Hard Drive from the Xbox Online Service Center. Console registration is required to replace a hard drive under warranty (the hard drive warranty is the same as your console warranty).
  3. If the above steps don’t solve the issue, request a console repair.

Flashing green light on Xbox 360 S console

The indicator light flashes green when the disc tray is opening, when the disc tray is about to open, and during ordinary DVD drive activity. For more information, see Flashing green light on the Xbox 360 console power button.

Note If an indicator light flashes green other times, such as when the console is turned off, you may need to request a console repair.
