Troubleshooting steps after your Xbox console update

If you get an error code such as xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-C000-0001 (with six groups of four-digits) after updating your console software, find the error below and try the suggested troubleshooting steps.

Note The “x” digits vary according to several factors, such as region.

The console is looking for a previous version of the system update. Follow these steps:

  1. Find a USB flash drive with at least 90 MB of free space.
  2. Plug the USB flash drive into a USB port on your computer.

    Note The USB flash drive must use the FAT32 file system (Windows).

  3. Download the system update for your error code

  4. Click Save to save the console update .zip file on your computer.
  5. Unzip the file. If you’re using Windows XP, Windows Vista or Windows 7, double-click the .zip file to unzip it.
  6. Copy the contents of the .zip file to the root directory of your USB flash drive.
  7. Unplug the USB flash drive from your computer.
  8. If there is a disc in the console, remove it.
  9. Turn off the console.
  10. Remove all console storage devices, including any USB flash drives, external hard drives or the internal hard drive on the Xbox 360 S console. Learn how to remove the hard drive.
  11. Plug the USB flash drive with the update into a USB port on console.
  12. Turn on the console. When the console starts, the software update should automatically start.

The update could not be downloaded from Xbox LIVE. Try the following:

  1. Try installing the update again.
  2. If you’re having problems connecting or staying connected to Xbox LIVE, see Xbox LIVE connection problems.

Note You can also update your console software by copying the update to a USB flash drive or a disc and then applying it to the console. See Troubleshoot console software update problems.

A storage device (such as a memory unit or hard drive) was not found during the software update. Follow these steps:

  1. Turn off your console.
  2. Remove all console storage devices, including any USB flash drives, external hard drives or the internal hard drive on the Xbox 360 S console. Learn how to remove the hard drive.
  3. Add your primary storage device, for example, the hard drive.
  4. Turn on the console
  5. Try updating the console again.

  1. Plug your USB flash drive into a USB port on your computer.
  2. Access the update file.
  3. Click Save to save the console update .zip file on your computer.
  4. Unzip the file. If you are using Windows XP, Windows Vista, or Windows 7, double-click the .zip file to unzip it.
  5. Copy the contents of the .zip file to the root directory of your flash drive.
  6. Unplug the USB flash drive from your computer.
  7. Plug the flash drive into a USB port on your Xbox 360 console.
  8. Restart the console.
  9. When the console restarts, the installation program starts automatically. Select Yes when you are prompted to update the new console software.
Note If the issue persists, submit a repair request online.

The software update failed while reading from the disc. Try the following:

  1. Make sure that the disc is clean.
  2. Put the disc in the disc drive and then turn your console off.
  3. Turn on the console. The update process should complete.

Note The disc you insert must be the same disc that was in the console when the update began.

If you continue to get the same error, try the following steps:

  1. Turn off your console.
  2. Remove all console storage devices, including any USB flash drives, external hard drives or the internal hard drive on the Xbox 360 S console. Learn how to remove the hard drive.
  3. Add your primary storage device, for example, the hard drive.
  4. Turn on the console.
  5. Try updating the console again.

This error occurs if your console has been tampered with or modified. Your console has been banned from Xbox LIVE and can no longer connect to Xbox LIVE, install software updates, or play new games that require a console software update. Learn about Xbox LIVE console bans.

Physically disconnect your network cable or remove your Xbox 360 Wireless Network Adaptor from the console.

You can use the following steps to turn off the automatic sign-in so that you can play games offline. To turn off auto sign-in:

  1. Restart your console.
  2. Select No if you are prompted to update your console software.
  3. Press the Guide button on your controller.
  4. Go to Settings and then select Profile.
  5. Select Sign-in Preferences.
  6. Set Profile Auto Sign-in to "Off".
  7. Press B on your controller to return to the Xbox Dashboard.

Your console can now play your existing games offline. Any future attempts to sign in to Xbox LIVE or update your console software will result in an error.

Your console had a problem during the update process. Carefully follow these step-by-step instructions:

  1. Eject the disc tray and remove any disc from the console.

    Important Don’t close the disc tray. Leave it open.

  2. With the disc tray open, remove the power cord from the back of the console.
  3. Gently push the disc tray about half-way back into the console.
  4. Plug the power cord back into the console.
  5. Push the power button on the console. The tray should close the rest of the way and then the console should restart and display the Xbox Dashboard.

    Important Don’t use the controller button or the disc tray eject button to turn on the console for this step.

  6. Try updating your console software again.

The update should now continue. If the above steps don’t work, the console might need to be repaired. Contact Xbox Support using the Assistance section at the bottom of this page.
