Error 80072741 occurs when using Xbox Live on Xbox 360

You see the following error when you use Xbox Live on Xbox 360:

Error 80072741

This may mean the following:

  • Some Xbox features are not available because of system maintenance or a temporary Xbox Live issue.
  • You can't access some Xbox features because of a network configuration issue.
  • There might be a problem with your payment method.

Solutions

Solution 1: Check for Xbox Live service alerts or test

To make sure there are no problems with the Xbox Live service, check the Service status page.

If there are no service alerts, there might be a problem with your connection.

Solution 2: Test your connection

Test the Xbox Live connection on your Xbox 360 console:

  1. Press the Guide button on your controller.
  2. Go to Settings and then System Settings.
  3. Select Network Settings.
  4. Select Wired Network or the name of your wireless network, if you are prompted.
  5. Select Test Xbox Live Connection.
  6. Do one of the following:
    • If the test fails and you can't connect to Xbox Live, see Xbox Live Networking support.
    • If the Xbox Live service is available, try the next solution.
    • If there is an Xbox Live service alert, try again later when the Xbox Live service is available.

Solution 3: Open network ports

If you have a firewall or are connected to a workplace or school network, you might need to open network ports for your Xbox 360 console to communicate with Xbox Live. See Network ports used by Xbox Live for help opening network ports.

Solution 4: Delete your gamertag and clear your cache

  1. Unplug any accessories attached to your console, such as a headset, the Xbox 360 Chatpad, or the Kinect Sensor.
  2. Delete your profile. For more information, see Manage gamertag and profile support.
  3. Clear your system cache twice. See How to clear the cache on Xbox 360.
  4. Recover your gamertag. See Manage gamertag and profile support.
  5. Restart your console.

Solution 5: Check your billing address and payment option expiration date

Make sure that the billing address for your Xbox Live account matches the billing address used by your credit card company. Also, make sure that your card’s expiration date has not passed.

To change the billing address for your Xbox Live account, see How to change or update Xbox Live billing account information.

Solution 6: Change your payment option

If you think there might be a problem with the payment option that’s associated with your account, you can change the payment option that you use. See Add a payment option to your Xbox Live account.

If you keep experiencing the problem, contact Xbox Support.
