Troubleshoot Xbox Live parties on Xbox 360

Party problems?

You can start an Xbox Live party on the Xbox 360 console and invite up to seven friends to watch a movie, play a game, or just chat online. The Party app uses a peer-to-peer networking system to connect your console to your friends’ consoles, so how your local network is configured is very important to figuring out what’s causing the problem.

If you’re having problems with an Xbox Live party, try the solutions below.

Can’t join a party?

If you can’t join an Xbox Live party, try the following solutions.

Solution 1: Have everyone in the party test their Xbox Live connection

Someone in your party might have a Network Address Translation (NAT) problem. To find out, have everyone test their connection. Here’s how:

  1. Press the Guide button on your controller, go to Settings, and then select System Settings.
  2. Select Network Settings.
  3. Select Wired Network or your wireless network name (if you are prompted to do so).
  4. Select Test Xbox Live Connection.
  5. If signed into a profile, select Yes when notified that testing your network connection will sign everyone out and then select Continue.

A NAT warning appears as a yellow exclamation point:

If someone has a NAT warning: Have your friend try the solutions in the NAT error solution wizard.

Solution 2: Have someone else host the Xbox Live party

Try having a friend host the Xbox Live party from their console. This can bypass some issues you may have on your network.

Make sure that your console is correctly configured for Xbox Live parties

Make sure that you have correctly configured your console to chat, text, and host a party, and that you have an Xbox Live Gold membership. See Xbox Live messaging, chat, and parties for more information.

Can’t hear or talk to someone in a party?

If your friends can’t hear everyone in the Xbox Live party, see Troubleshoot problems with Xbox Live chat.

Xbox Live game play is slow

If Xbox Live party game play is slow, see Improve Xbox Live speed.
