How to play music and videos on your Zune player

Playing music

You can play your favorite music by song, genre, album, artist, or playlist—or shuffle everything if you can't decide.

Play music by category

  1. On the Zune player home menu, select Music.
  2. Select Songs, Genres, Albums, Artists, or Playlists.
  3. Select a song, genre, album, artist, or playlist, and then select Play.

Using shuffle

When you shuffle music, songs are played in random order. To turn shuffle on or off:

  • On a Zune HD, while playing music, tap Shuffle to turn Shuffle on or off.
  • On all other Zune players, press the Zune pad while playing music, and then select Shuffle to turn Shuffle on or off.

To set the default behavior on a Zune player, go to Settings, then Music. The current setting is displayed (for example, Shuffle: on means that shuffle is currently on). Select Shuffle to change the default behavior.

Shuffle your collection

  • On a Zune HD, tap Play next to Music on the home menu.
  • On all other Zune players, go to Music, select a subcategory, and then select Shuffle all.

Build an impromptu playlist

You can create a playlist as you go by adding items to the Now Playing list.

  • On a Zune HD, find an item (a song, genre, album, artist, or playlist), press and hold the item, then tap Add to now playing.
  • On all other Zune players, find an item (a song, genres, album, artist, or playlist), and then select Add to now playing.

Using repeat

When you turn on Repeat, music repeats once or repeats continuously for nonstop playback. With repeat turned off, music stops playing at the end of the album or playlist.

  • On a Zune HD, while playing music, tap Repeat to turn it on, repeat once, or turn it off.
  • On all other Zune players, press the Zune pad while playing music, and select Repeat to turn Repeat on or off.

To set the default behavior on a Zune player, go to Settings, then Music. The current setting is displayed (for example Repeat: on means that Repeat is currently on). Select Repeat to change the default behavior.

Rate your songs

You can rate songs as you play them to keep track of which ones you like or don't like.

  • On a Zune HD, while playing music, tap the Rating icon to set it to Like, Don't Like, or Unrated.
  • On all other Zune players, press the Zune pad while playing music, and select Rating to change between Like, Don't Like, or Unrated.

Choose the level of artist detail to display

The Artists view on your Zune player can show both album artist and song artist for every song in your collection. This can make the artists list very long. To shorten it, you can choose to display only the album artist.

  • On any Zune player, go to Settings, Music, and then select Artists to change between Album only or Song and album.

Playing videos

Take your favorite videos with you to watch on the bus, in the coffee shop, or wherever you go.
