Create and customize playlists using Smart DJ

Smart DJ automatically creates a playlist for you based on any album, artist, or song of your choice. The playlists are created from music in your collection. But if you have a Zune Music Pass or an Xbox Music Pass, you can also create Smart DJ playlists from music in the Zune Marketplace catalog. You can also create Smart DJ playlists and sync them to your Zune player or Windows Phone.

Launch a Smart DJ mix

From your collection

  1. Open the Zune Music + Video software and click Collection in the upper-left part of the screen.
  2. Find a song, album, or artist, right-click the title, and then select Play Smart DJ mix. You can also click the Smart DJ icon that appears when you point to an album. 

From Quickplay

  1. Open the Zune Music + Video software and click Quickplay in the upper-left part of the screen.
  2. Click any tile labeled Smart DJ in the bottom part of the screen under your other pinned items.
  3. If you haven't done so already, click Add an artist or this icon:

Enter the name of any artist in your collection to set up a Smart DJ playlist. Then, click the Play Smart DJ mix icon.

For Zune Music Pass or Xbox Music Pass subscribers

If you have a Zune Music Pass or Xbox Music Pass, you can launch a Smart DJ mix based on artists that are available in the Zune Marketplace catalog along with music from your collection. To launch a Smart DJ mix from the Zune Marketplace:

  1. Start the Zune Music + Video software and click Marketplace in the upper-left part of the screen.
  2. Find an artist, song, or album you like, and then click the Smart DJ icon to launch a mix.

After you launch a Smart DJ mix and the songs start to play, the Smart DJ song list is displayed on the Now Playing screen. If you leave this screen and want to return to it, click the Now Playing icon in the lower-right corner of the screen.

As soon as a Smart DJ mix starts playing, it will play for as long as Smart DJ can find similar songs. To save a Smart DJ mix as a playlist, read on.

Create Smart DJ playlists

To create a Smart DJ playlist from your collection

  1. Right-click any song, artist, or album in your collection (or Marketplace if you have a Zune Music Pass or Xbox Music Pass), and then click Create Smart DJ playlist.

    Note If you get “No results found,” try again. This can mean the selected song doesn’t have enough metadata (information) to create a match.

  2. Name your playlist.
  3. If you want Smart DJ to update the playlist with new selections, select Automatically refresh this playlist periodically check box.
  4. Click OK to save your playlist.

To save the Smart DJ mix that you're listening to

  1. If you’re not already on the Now Playing screen, click the Now Playing icon in the lower-right corner of any Zune software screen.

  1. At the bottom of the Now Playing list, click Save as Playlist.
  2. Name your playlist, and then click OK. You’ll find your new Smart DJ playlist in your collection’s Playlist column under “Smart DJ.”

To create a Smart DJ playlist from an artist in the Zune Marketplace

Note You need a Zune Music Pass or Xbox Music Pass.

  1. Start the Zune software.
  2. Click Marketplace at the top of the screen, click Music, and then find an artist's page.
  3. Click the Smart DJ icon.
  4. On the Now Playing screen, click Save as Playlist.

Find your Smart DJ playlists in the Zune software

Click Collection in the upper-left part of the screen, click Music, and then click Playlists in the upper-right part of the screen. Your playlists are in the left column under “Smart DJ.”

Sync a Smart DJ playlist with a device

  1. Start the Zune software and click Collection at the top of the screen.
  2. Click Music, and then click Playlists in the upper-right part of the screen.
  3. Find your Smart DJ playlist in the left column and drag it to the Device icon in the lower-left corner of the page.

Use Smart DJ on your Zune HD

You can launch a Smart DJ mix from your Zune HD player in different ways, depending on whether you have a Zune Music Pass or Xbox Music Pass.

  • You can create a mix from your music collection. Here’s how:
    1. From your music collection, find a song, artist, or album.
    2. Press and hold the item, and then select Play Smart DJ Mix. Or, tap the Smart DJ icon on an artist page.
  • If you have a Zune Music Pass or Xbox Music Pass and you are within range of a wireless network, you can create a streaming Smart DJ mix that includes music from the Marketplace catalog. Here’s how:
    1. From your player, tap Marketplace and find a song, artist, or album.
    2. Press and hold the item and then select Play Smart DJ Mix. Or, tap the Smart DJ icon on an artist page.
  • If you have a Zune Music Pass or Xbox Music Pass and you don’t want songs from the Marketplace catalog included, turn off the wireless connection. Here’s how:
    1. From your player’s home menu, tap Settings, and then tap Wireless. You’ll see whether your connection is “on” or “off.”
    2. If it’s on, tap Wireless again to turn it off.

Customize Smart DJ playlists

Options to customize your Smart DJ playlists:

  • Automatic refresh: This setting automatically generates a new set of songs. If your playlist has an Items I choose sync relationship with your Zune device, the Smart DJ playlist will automatically be updated on your Zune device the next time you sync it to your collection.
  • Playlist duration: This sets your playlist to play for a certain amount of time or to include a specific number of songs. Your playlist can have up to 100 songs or be up to 500 minutes long.

To change settings for Automatic refresh or Playlist duration

  1. In the Zune Music + Video software, click Collection in the upper-left part of the screen.
  2. Click Music, and then click Playlists in the upper-right part of the screen.
  3. Select a Smart DJ playlist, and then click EDIT PLAYLIST or REFRESH in the lower-right corner of the screen.

  1. If you’re editing your playlist, enter the new settings and click OK. If you refreshed your playlist, Zune will automatically refresh the songs in that list.

Use Smart DJ with Quickplay

Quickplay lets you pin your favorite music and playlists to one screen, where you can access them easily.

To pin a Smart DJ playlist to Quickplay

  1. Open the Zune software and click Collections in the upper-left part of the screen.
  2. Click Music and then click Playlist in the upper-right part of the screen.
  3. Look for your Smart DJ playlist in the left column with your other playlists.
  4. Right-click the playlist, and then select Pin to Quickplay.
  5. The next time you go to your Quickplay page, you’ll see your Smart DJ pin on the screen.

Create a Smart DJ list from Quickplay

You can create Smart DJ pages based on songs in your collection directly on your Quickplay screen. Here’s how:

  1. Open the Zune software, and then click Quickplay.
  2. Look for the Smart DJ pins under the pins you already have.
  3. Click a Smart DJ tile that doesn’t have a playlist.
  4. Enter an artist from your collection, and then confirm. The next time you go to Quickplay and click the name of your new Smart DJ playlist, you’ll see the new playlist.
