Error message “Error: Can't connect to Live” occurs when you try to connect to Games for Windows Live

Problem

You may see the following error message when you try to connect to Games for Windows Live:

Error: Can't connect to Live

This means that your computer cannot connect to Games for Windows Live.

Solution

To resolve this problem, try the following solutions:

  • Solution 1: Verify that your computer is connected to the Internet

To verify that your computer is connected to the Internet, open a webpage in a browser.

  • Solution 2: Check port configuration settings

If you have a firewall or network hardware, such as a router, you may need to make a configuration change for your computer to communicate with Xbox Live. This configuration change is sometimes called "opening ports" or "port forwarding."

The following ports need to be open to play Games for Windows Live games:

    • Port 88 (UDP)
    • Port 3074 (UDP and TCP)
    • Port 53 (UDP and TCP)
    • Port 80 (TCP)
    • Port 443 (TCP)

For more information, see Network ports used by Games for Windows Live.

Note Some antivirus and spyware programs may not let you access all features when you connect to Games for Windows Live. We recommended that you contact the vendor of your security software to obtain support for connecting to the Games for Windows Live service.

  • Solution 3: Update to your network adapter and router
    • Update the network adapter driver
To update the network adapter driver, install the latest drivers that are available from the manufacturer's website.
    • Update your router firmware
To update the router’s firmware, contact the manufacturer of the router or the gateway to find out how to update the network hardware.
    • Install the latest Games for Windows Live update
To install the latest Games for Windows Live update, follow these steps:
      1. Quit any games that you are playing.
      2. Open a web browser, and then download the latest Games for Windows Live update.
      3. Save the update file to the desktop.
      4. Restart the computer so that all the processes are closed.

Note Open or running processes may prevent a successful update of the Games for Windows Live components.

      1. Double-click the Games for Windows Live update that you downloaded.
      2. Follow the instructions that appear on the screen to complete the installation.
      3. Restart the computer if you are prompted.
      4. Start the Games for Windows Live game, and then connect to the Live service.
