How to assign a profile to an Xbox One Wireless Controller

Overview

Pair your profile to your Xbox One Wireless Controller so that your profile is in control of the action on your console. This is especially important if you have multiple users and controllers being used at the same time. By pairing your profile to the wireless controller, you ensure that everyone has the best experience, and of course, the best achievement.

If you need help on how to wirelessly sync your controller to your console before assigning a profile, see Connect a wireless controller to your Xbox One.

Automatically assign a profile to a wireless controller

You can automatically assign a profile to a wireless controller using Kinect. Just make sure you meet the following requirements:

Once you’ve met the requirements, it’s easy to assign the profile to a wireless controller using Kinect. Here’s how:

  1. Turn on the controller you want to use by pressing the Xbox button.
  2. While standing up to six feet away, point the front of the controller toward your Kinect sensor so that Kinect can see the infrared signal from the controller.
  3. Now that Kinect recognizes you and knows which controller you’re holding, it will automatically assign you to that controller.

The following notes apply when you have multiple users or multiple controllers:

  • If you pick up a different controller, Kinect will recognize this action and reassign your profile to that controller in the same manner as it did for your controller.
  • If another recognized user picks up your controller, it will be assigned to that user.
  • If an unrecognized player picks up your controller, the controller will remain paired to your profile.

Manually assign a profile to a wireless controller

If you have a guest who wants to use a controller, or if you don’t want to automatically pair your profile with your controller by using Kinect, you can sign in using any wireless controller.

  1. Make sure the controller is powered on, and then go to the Dashboard.
  2. In the upper-right corner of the Home screen, select the profile that you want to sign in with.

  1. The controller you’re using is now assigned to that profile.

If you have multiple controllers being used, the only way to tell which user is assigned to a specific controller is by when they can control what’s happening on the screen. There are no LED indicators on the controller or console as with the Xbox 360, because with Xbox One, you can have up to eight controllers connected at one time.
