Connect your charge cable to use your Xbox One Wireless Controller without batteries

Note If you experience disconnect issues with your controller, see Xbox One Wireless Controller disconnects or can’t connect.

Your Xbox One Wireless Controller can be connected to your Xbox One console without having batteries or a battery pack by using your charge cable. When the charge cable is attached, the wireless controller converts to a wired controller.

Simply plug the charging cable that came with your controller into the controller, and plug the other end into the Xbox One console.

Notes

  • The LED on the charge cable will not be lit, indicating there’s no battery available to charge.
  • If you inserted standard alkaline batteries while using your controller as a wired controller, then the batteries will not be used to power the controller functions.
  • You can use most USB-certified cables instead of the charge cable that comes with the Xbox One Play & Charge Kit, but performance may vary.
