How to turn on your Xbox One console

Use one of the following methods to turn on your console:

  • Press the Xbox button on your wireless controller.
  • Press the power button on the front of the console.

Troubleshooting

If you're having trouble turning on your Xbox One console, try the following:

  • If you have an original Xbox One, verify that the power supply unit (PSU) light is white or orange. If the PSU light is not on, make sure that the power cords are firmly plugged into the wall and into your console.
  • If you have an Xbox One S, unplug your console from the outlet for 10 seconds, then plug it back in.
  • If you're using your wireless controller to turn on your console:
    • Make sure that the wireless controller has fresh batteries.
    • Make sure that the wireless controller has been connected to the console.

How to turn off your Xbox One console

Use one of the following methods to turn off your console:

  • Press and hold down the Xbox button on your wireless controller until the power menu is displayed. Then, select the option to turn off your console.
  • Double-tap the Xbox button to open the guide.
    1. Select Settings.
    2. Select Turn off console.
    3. Select Yes to confirm.
  • Press the power button on the front of the console.

Depending on the power mode that's configured on your Xbox One, your console will either go into instant-on power mode or turn completely off. For more information about power modes, visit About energy-saving and instant-on power modes.

Troubleshooting

If you're having trouble turning off your Xbox One console, try the following steps:

  • Hold down the power button on your console for about 10 seconds. This will force the console to shut down.
  • As a last resort, unplug the console. Note that this may affect any current activity. For example, if you unplug the console while saving a game, the game may be lost or corrupted.

    Important Do not unplug the console while system updates are being installed.

Using voice

If you have Kinect, and the command is supported in your language, you can turn on the console with your voice. Say "Xbox, on," or, if you have Cortana, "Hey Cortana, Xbox on."

To turn off your console, say "Xbox, turn off," or, if you have Cortana, "Hey Cortana, turn off."
