“Do you own this game or app?” message on Xbox One

Problem

When you try to play a game that’s installed on your Xbox One, you get the following message:

Do you own this game or app?

If you have a game disc, insert it now. Otherwise, make sure you’re signed in to Xbox Live. If you don’t have rights for playing it, you’ll need to buy it at the Xbox Games Store. 

This message occurs when the game disc is not in the disc drive or can’t be read, or, for a downloaded game, the owner is either not signed in or hasn’t enabled sharing.

Solutions

Solution 1: Insert the game disc

If you purchased the game on disc, you must have the disc in the disc drive to play. Even though the game is installed on the hard drive, Xbox One uses the disc to verify ownership. If the disc is already in the drive and you still have the problem, see My disc won’t load on the Xbox One console.

Solution 2: Have the game’s owner enable sharing

For games purchased in digital form (downloaded), the person who originally purchased the game can enable game sharing on the Xbox One console. This will allow anyone signed in to the console to play games owned by that person. For more information, see About My home Xbox.

Solution 3: Have the game’s owner sign in to Xbox Live

If the game was purchased in digital form and the owner is unable or unwilling to enable sharing, the owner has to be signed in and connected to Xbox Live for that game to be played.

Solution 4: Purchase a digital copy

If none of the above options are available, or if you just want to have your own digital copy of the game, select the See in Xbox Store button and purchase a digital copy. You won’t have to reinstall the game before you can play.
