Your Xbox One Kinect Sensor won’t turn on

Overview

If you’re having trouble with your Xbox One Kinect Sensor, start by verifying that the sensor is turned on. You’ll know that the sensor is on if the Xbox logo on the front of the sensor is bright.

If the Xbox logo on the front of the sensor is not lit, or it is lit but your console is telling you the sensor is disconnected, follow the troubleshooting steps on this page.

Solutions

Your Kinect sensor is unplugged

If your Xbox One console doesn't detect your Kinect sensor, the “Kinect not detected” icon is displayed in the upper-right section of the Xbox Dashboard. This icon is an image of the sensor with a line through it.

If you see this icon on the Dashboard, try these solutions:

  • Make sure the connector on the end of the Kinect cable is plugged firmly into the Kinect port on the back of the console.
  • If the connector is firmly connected, unplug it, wait 10 seconds, and then plug it in again.
  • If you’re still having trouble, restart your console.

Your Kinect sensor is turned off in the Settings menu

To verify that your sensor is turned on in the Settings menu, press the Menu button on your controller, select Settings, and then select Kinect. Verify that Kinect on is selected.

Reset your Kinect sensor’s connection

Follow these steps to reset the Kinect sensor’s connection:

  1. Power off the Xbox One console by pressing the Xbox button on the front of the console for 10 seconds, until it shuts down completely.
  2. Unplug the console’s power cable.
  3. Unplug the Kinect sensor from the console.
  4. Plug the console power cable back in.
  5. Press the Xbox button on your console to power up the Xbox One.
  6. Press the Menu button on your controller.
  7. Select Settings, and then select Kinect.
  8. Plug the Kinect sensor into the back of the console and wait 5 seconds for it to be recognized.
Note If your sensor needs an update, the screen will indicate that an update is in progress.

Update your Kinect sensor

If you haven’t connected to Xbox Live recently, your Xbox One console may need to be updated. To update your console, connect to Xbox Live by using a wired or wireless connection.

When your console is connected to Xbox Live, available updates are automatically installed. After the updates are installed, test your Kinect sensor and try these steps again if necessary.

If you didn’t have your Kinect sensor plugged in when your console took an update, follow these steps to update your sensor:

  1. From the Home screen, press the Menu button on your controller.
  2. Select Settings, and then select Kinect.
  3. Verify that Kinect on is selected.
Note If your sensor needs to be updated, this screen will indicate that it’s updating, which should take approximately two minutes. If the screen doesn’t indicate that an update is taking place, then your sensor is up to date.
