Troubleshooting Kinect sign-in

Learn how to troubleshoot sign-in issues with your Kinect sensor on your Xbox One console.

The Kinect sensor won’t turn on

If your Kinect sensor won’t turn on, a setting may be turned off.

Make sure that your Kinect sensor is turned on in Settings

  1. Go to the Home screen.
  2. Press the Menu button on your Xbox One Wireless Controller.

    Note You can say "Xbox, go to settings" from any screen, but you'll need a wireless controller to navigate when you're on the Settings screen.

  2. On the Settings screen, select Kinect.
  3. If there's no check mark next to the Kinect on option, select that option.

Make sure that Kinect sign-in is turned on in the Settings menu

  1. Press the Menu button on your controller, then select Settings.
  2. Select Sign-in, security & passkey.
  3. Under SIGN IN & SECURITY, make sure that Kinect Sign-in is turned on.

The Kinect sensor doesn’t recognize you

Kinect occasionally doesn’t recognize you or occasionally recognizes someone else as you

  1. Press the Xbox button to return to Home.
  2. Sign all other users out.
  3. Press the Xbox button.
  4. At the top of the screen, select Sign-in.
  5. On the Who do you want to sign in as screen, select I wasn’t recognized.

  1. Select your user profile. This brings up a screen showing Kinect’s view of you. Make sure you’re in view and that you’re facing the Kinect sensor.
  2. Make sure your name appears next to you on the screen, then select That’s Me.

Kinect consistently doesn’t recognize you

  1. Sign all other users out.
  2. Press the Menu button on the controller, then select Settings. Or, say “Xbox go to Settings.
  3. Select Sign-in, Security & Passkey.
  4. Under SIGN IN & SECURITY, select Reset my Kinect sign-in data.
  5. Select Delete on the confirmation screen.
  6. Select Kinect sign-in.
  7. Make sure your name appears next to you on the screen, then select That’s Me.

Notes

  • Kinect sign-in data is saved on the console. Therefore, if you want to use this feature on other consoles that you use, you must set up Kinect sign-in data on each console.
  • If multiple people are in the view during sign up, known users will have their names highlighted next to them. Unknown users will be listed as “guest.”
  • If you make a mistake by selecting the wrong person during sign up, just follow the “Kinect consistently doesn’t recognize you” instructions on this page.
