You've forgotten your Xbox One passkey

Overview

If you’ve forgotten the passkey that you use to sign in on your Xbox One console or that you have set for purchases or managing child accounts, follow the steps on this page to resolve this issue.

Solutions

You’ve forgotten the passkey you required for sign-in

If you’ve forgotten your passkey, you won’t be able to sign in using the passkey. There are two solutions to this problem: sign in using your Microsoft account password, or remove your profile from your Xbox One console.

Solution 1: Sign in using your Microsoft account password

First, try to enter your passkey three times. After the third attempt, Xbox One will prompt you to enter your Microsoft account password. When you do, you can sign in, go to Settings, and then delete your passkey:

  1. Go to the Home screen or say “Xbox, go home.
  2. Press the Menu button on the controller.

  1. Select Settings.
Note You can say “Xbox, go to settings” from any screen, but you’ll need a controller to navigate once you’re on the Settings screen.

If you don’t know your Microsoft account password, you will have to remove your account from the console.

Solution 2: Remove your profile from your Xbox One console

After you remove yourself from a console, you will have to add yourself back. Once you do that, you will need to sign in with your password once. Your passkey settings will kick in the next time you sign in.

To remove your profile from Xbox One:

  1. Go to the Home screen, or say “Xbox, go home.”
  2. Press the Menu button on the controller.
  3. Select Settings.

Note You can say “Xbox, go to settings” directly from any screen, but you’ll need a controller to navigate once you’re on the Settings screen.

Solution: Delete your old passkey and create a new one

If you’re able to sign in, you can simply delete the forgotten passkey and create a new one.

  1. Go to the Home screen or say “Xbox, go home.”
  2. Press the Menu button on the controller.
