On this page

Start a party on the Xbox One console

Parties allow you to group up and chat with your friends through your Xbox One. You can do this with a single pal or up to 12 friends.

Note To start or join a party, you (and your participating friends) must have a current Xbox Live Gold subscription and be signed in with the gamertag associated with that subscription.

If you're having trouble joining or starting a party, see You can't switch to party chat on Xbox One.

Chat or write messages to people in your party

  1. Scroll left on the Home screen to open the guide.
  2. Under Party, select Start a party.
  3. As long as you're using a headset, you should be able to chat with your friends right away. But if you want to write messages, scroll left and select Show text chat. If you want to go back to chatting with your friends in a game, select Switch to game chat instead.
  4. If you've selected Show text chat, select New message and type your message.

Note If you're having issues with hearing your friends or your friends can't hear you, see the Xbox One Multiplayer Game Solution.
