Xbox One backward compatibility is here! Now you can play a growing number of digital and disc-based Xbox 360 games on your Xbox One console.
Xbox 360 games run within an emulator on Xbox One, which means you'll be able to use most features from both systems while playing games, such as screenshots, broadcasting, and Game DVR.
For the list of Xbox 360 games you can play on your Xbox One, go to the Xbox 360 catalog.
To see if the Xbox 360 games you own are backward compatible, go to My games. Select your gamerpic in the upper-left corner of the page, sign in to your Microsoft account, select My games, and then scroll down to Xbox 360. If your game has Backwards Compatible under it, you can play it on Xbox One.
And don't forget to vote for the Xbox 360 games you're most excited to play on Xbox One.
For more information on backward compatibility, see the Xbox One backward compatibility FAQ.
To play Xbox 360 games on Xbox One, first make sure your game is supported for Xbox One gameplay. Games supported for backward compatibility are listed in the Xbox 360 catalog.
Next, just pop the Xbox 360 disc into your Xbox One console. Or, if you own a game digitally, look for it in your games list under Ready to install. In both cases, the game will download to your console. For disc-based games, the disc is needed to play the game.
For instructions on how to download and install games, go to How to install games on Xbox One.
Note The first time you start an Xbox 360 game on your Xbox One, you'll have to sign in and download your Xbox 360 profile.
To continue playing a game on Xbox One that you started on Xbox 360, save it to the cloud. If you're already using cloud saves, you're good to go. If your saved game is stored only on your Xbox 360, you'll have to upload it to the cloud.
Enable cloud-based storage on your Xbox 360
To enable cloud-based storage, you need:
Now, follow these steps:
To confirm that your saved game has synced with the cloud, follow these steps:
Some games (mostly arcade games) will save your game progress to your profile instead of creating a save file. Even though you don't see a file, your game progress will transfer over when you change consoles.
Make sure you save your game frequently while playing on Xbox One. If you open another full-screen app or game without saving, you'll lose your unsaved progress.
Kinect and accessories designed for Xbox 360, and games requiring those accessories, are not compatible with Xbox One consoles. This means racing wheels, fight sticks, and other accessories won't work with the Xbox 360 game on the Xbox One console.
Note Xbox 360 games that use the Xbox 360 Kinect will not work with the Xbox One Kinect.
While playing your Xbox 360 game on Xbox One, you can access the Xbox 360 guide by pressing the View and Menu buttons on your Xbox One controller at the same time.
Note Some games use these buttons independently for separate functions. Watch for unexpected actions if you press one button before the other.
Tip When an Xbox 360 notification appears on your screen, press and hold the View and Menu buttons at the same time to act on it.
While playing an Xbox 360 game on your Xbox One, you can start a party chat using either the Xbox One party chat or the in-game Xbox 360 party chat.
Xbox 360 to Xbox One party chat
To start an Xbox One party chat with your friends who are also playing on an Xbox One, double-tap the Xbox button and then select Parties.
Xbox 360 to Xbox 360 party chat
To start a party with your friends who are using an Xbox 360, go to the Xbox 360 guide while you're in the Xbox 360 game (press the View and Menu buttons at the same time). Then select Party, Invite Players to Party, and then Select the friends you want to play with.
An invite will be sent to your friend. Once your friend accepts it, you'll both automatically join the party.
Playing a multiplayer Xbox 360 game on Xbox One
If a game supports multiplayer play on the same console, you'll be able to add a second player to the game as you would normally do within a game on the Xbox 360.
Note Make sure both players are also signed in to the Xbox One.
If you run into problems playing Xbox 360 party or multiplayer games, try the Xbox One Multiplayer Game Solution.
If you earned achievements on Xbox 360, you'll still have them when you play on Xbox One.
You can view your Xbox 360 game achievements by either:
Note Snapping achievements is not available for Xbox 360 games.
