Xbox Live sign-in error: “Your account has been suspended”

Problem

You see the following error message when you try to sign in to Xbox Live:

Your account has been suspended

This may mean that your account has been suspended because we haven’t been able to charge your credit or debit card for your membership renewal.

Note You can’t use Xbox Live Gold features until payment is made for your Xbox Live membership renewal.
