Move your Xbox LIVE profile to another Xbox 360 console using a flash drive or memory unit

Overview

There are times when you might want to remove your profile from your Xbox 360 console and move it to another Xbox 360 console. For example, you may want to use your profile on a console at a friend’s house.

There are two ways you can move your profile between consoles. One way is to download it onto another console by following the instructions on the page Download your Xbox LIVE profile to a new console or redownload it. Another way is use a USB flash drive or Xbox 360 Memory Unit. This page describes how to do that, as well as how to restore your profile to your own console once you’ve finished playing at a friend’s house.

Remove your profile from your console

  1. Plug a USB flash drive or an Xbox 360 Memory Unit into your console.
Note The Xbox 360 Memory Unit can be used only with the Original Xbox.
  2. Go to Settings, then select System.
  3. Select Storage.
  4. Select All Devices.
  5. Select Profiles and then select your gamer profile.
  6. Select Move.
Note This process will permanently remove the profile from your console. You move your profile back to your console later following the directions later on this page.
  7. Select the flash drive or memory unit that you want to move your profile to.
  8. When the move is complete, remove the USB flash drive or memory unit from your console and take it to another console.

Important When you move your profile to another console, you’ll be prompted for your Microsoft account password. This password requirement is to protect the security of your account if your storage device is lost or stolen. For information on how to protect your profile, see Password protect your Xbox LIVE profile.

Move your profile back to your console

When you’ve finished playing on your friend’s console, take the USB flash drive or memory unit back home and plug it into your console. If you want to move your profile back to your hard drive, go back to Settings, select System, select Storage and then follow the prompts.
