Redownload purchased content to a new or refurbished Xbox 360 console

You can redownload content that you previously purchased from the Xbox Stores to a new or refurbished console.

Why would I download previously purchased content again?

When you purchase content through Xbox Live and download it to an Xbox 360 console for the first time, Xbox Live recognises the console you download to as your primary console. When you download content through Xbox Live to your console, you also download that item's content licence (the permission to use that content as intended) to your console. (For more about content licences, see Xbox 360 Digital Rights Management.)

The content licences for your purchased and downloaded content are on your primary console.

If you try to download previously purchased content to a new or refurbished Xbox 360 console, Xbox Live will recognise that console as a different console. Therefore, you won't be able to download the content. You may get the following error message:

To resolve this issue, set your new or refurbished console as your primary console. To do this, you must first download something new from Xbox Live to your new or refurbished console's queue. Then, download your previously purchased content. Here's how:

  1. Download some new content to your new console. For example, select the trial version of a game from the Xbox Games Store.

  1. Select Confirm Purchase. The content is added to the Active Downloads queue on your console.
    Note By completing step 2, you set your refurbished or new console as your primary console.
  2. Now download the content that you previously purchased:
    1. Press the Guide button on your controller.
    2. Select Xbox Home.
    3. Select Settings.
    4. Select Account.
    5. Select Download History.
    6. Select the content you want, and then select Download Again.
