Buy and redeem Xbox Live Gold memberships and passes for your account
This article explains how to redeem prepaid codes so you can make Xbox purchases and extend your memberships. It also explains how to check your Microsoft account balance.
Prepaid codes usually come in the form of cards with a 25-character code on the back. You can purchase them yourself from a retailer, or you might receive them as a gift. You can use prepaid codes to make purchases without a credit card. You can redeem prepaid codes on your console or on a computer.
Following is a list of the types of prepaid codes you can use to purchase Xbox-related content, and a list of the type of content you can purchase with these prepaid codes.
Types of prepaid codes
Xbox Live Gold membership: This is a type of prepaid code that can be redeemed for an Xbox Live Gold membership.
Xbox Music Pass card: This is a type of prepaid code that can be redeemed for an Xbox Music Pass.
Other prepaid codes: Besides Microsoft Points, and Xbox Live Gold cards, there are other types of prepaid codes for specific items such as games, app content, Xbox music content and Xbox Live content.
Microsoft Points: As part of the next Xbox 360 system update, Microsoft Points will be retired, and transactions on Xbox will take place using your local currency instead of Microsoft Points. Microsoft Points Cards you purchase from retailers will continue to be redeemable on your console and Xbox.com until further notice. Microsoft has no plans to discontinue acceptance of previously purchased Microsoft Points cards and codes.
Content you can purchase by redeeming prepaid codes
You can redeem any type of prepaid code on your console, including an Xbox Music Pass, an Xbox Live Gold membership, and prepaid codes for games, movies and other content.
You redeem all codes in the same way, although depending on what kind of prepaid code you’re redeeming, your account will be affected differently. For more information about how your account is affected by the various types of prepaid codes, see How prepaid codes affect your account.
Here’s how to redeem a prepaid code on your console:
Sign in to Xbox Live using the account for which you want to use the prepaid code.
Press the Guide button on the controller.
Go to Games & Apps and select Redeem Code.
Enter the 25-character prepaid code and select Done.
When prompted, click Yes to confirm the redemption.
Redeem prepaid codes on a computer
You can redeem all types of prepaid codes, including Xbox Live gold cards and Xbox Music Pass cards, on a computer and have them applied to your account immediately. Here's how:
On a computer, go to Redeem Code and sign in with your Microsoft account.
Enter the 25-character pre-paid code and click Redeem Code.
How prepaid codes affect your account
When you redeem a code for an Xbox Live Gold membership: An Xbox Live Gold membership is added to your account, or an existing membership is extended.
When you redeem a code for an Xbox Music Pass: An Xbox Music Pass is added to your account.
When you redeem a code for Microsoft Points: Microsoft Points are added to your account. Note As part of the next Xbox 360 system update, Microsoft Points will be retired and transactions on Xbox will take place using your local currency instead of Microsoft Points. When you redeem a code for Xbox Live content: The content is added to your account and begins downloading.
Check your Microsoft account balance
To see your Microsoft account balance and your payment history:
Go to your Microsoft account page and sign in using the Microsoft account email address and password associated with the account.
After signing in, you are prompted to enter a code that you’ll receive by email. This is proof of identity.
From your Microsoft account homepage, click Payment options to see your account balance.
