Play Games from Your Hard Drive

If you install a game to your hard drive, you can play it directly from the hard drive instead of playing it from the CD. When you play games from your hard drive, they often play faster and quieter. Most Xbox 360 games are supported, including multi-disc games.

To install a game to the hard drive:

  1. Put the game CD in the console disc tray.
  2. Go to My Xbox. The first card in the channel will be the disc.
  3. Don't select the game. Instead, press the Y button for Game Details.
  4. Select Install to Hard Drive. If the game can't be installed to the hard drive, you'll see a message. Otherwise, you'll see a progress bar.
  5. When the progress bar shows "100% complete", press the A button to continue.

At this point, you can play the game by selecting Play from Hard Drive, or you can press the B button to return to the dashboard.

To play a game from the hard drive:

  1. Go to My Xbox and open Game Library.
  2. Select the game, then select Play from Hard Drive.
Note

Games that were created for the Original Xbox can't be installed to the hard drive.

If you run out of space on your hard drive, see Delete Games with Xbox 360 to make more room.
