For some network issues, you'll need to update the settings for your router. Every router has different ways to configure it. However, most manufacturers provide a router configuration web page to edit router settings.
Accessing the Configuration Page
You can usually open a router's configuration page by going to that router's IP address on the network.
To find your router's address:
- On your computer, click Start, Run, type cmd, and press ENTER. A window with a command prompt will appear.
- In the window, type ipconfig /all and press ENTER.
- Look for a line that starts with "Default Gateway" and write down the address (usually it will be 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.2.1).
To access your router's configuration page:
Open a web browser, and in the address bar, type http:// followed by the address you wrote down. Press ENTER.
The layout of the router configuration page varies by model and manufacturer, but you should be able to browse the pages to find the settings you're looking for.
Changing Settings
Some settings on your router may be easier to find than others. If you need help finding a particular setting, consult your router documentation or go to the manufacturer's web site for instructions.
Note
Be careful when editing your router's settings. Changing the wrong setting can have undesired effects on your network. Before you change a setting, write it down so that you can change it back if you need to.
