Test Your Network

Can't connect? Your Xbox 360 console can help you test and fix many network problems.

Testing Your Network Connection

If you're having problems connecting to Xbox LIVE, sharing media from your PC, or connecting to Windows Media Center, try testing your network.

To test your connection:

  1. In the Xbox Dashboard, go to Xbox 360, open System Settings, and select Network Settings.
  2. Depending on the connection you want to test, select one of the following:
    • Test Xbox LIVE Connection
    • Test PC Connection (for media sharing from Windows Media Player 11, Zune, or Windows Home Server)
    • Test Windows Media Center (for Windows Media Center only)

Interpreting Test Results

If the network test passes, you'll see this.

Successful network test.

If the test fails, you get a message telling you there was a problem. Select More Info to see a series of suggestions for how to solve the problem.

Network troubleshooting suggestion.

Some of the fixes are more complicated than others. If you need more help with any of the suggestions, visit Network Help to get detailed instructions that guide you through each step of every solution.

To make things easier, note the first paragraph at the top of the Test Failed screen on your console (for example, "Can't obtain an IP address from your router or modem") before you head back to the web. Then click the link that matches your message.

If you need someone to walk you through the suggestions, contact Xbox Customer Support.
