You may find that your first-party controller is not functioning correctly.

Follow these steps to troubleshoot problems with a malfunctioning first-party controller:
| 1. | If you are using the DVD Movie Playback Kit, remove the DVDreceiver. |
| 2. | Verify that the Xbox controller is attached correctly.
Note The connector at the end of Xbox controller cord has a thumb indentation that must be facing up when connected to the Xbox console. |
| 3. | Verify that you have the inline release plug connected. If your inline release plug is firmly connected, make sure that you have the grooved indentations lined up correctly.
Note The inline release plug is cylindrical, with grooved indentations on both parts of the plug. |
| 4. | Make sure that there is no foreign substance between the controller plug and the controller port or that there is no damage to the controller plug. |
| 5. | Disconnect and then reconnect the inline release on the Xbox controller cord. | • | If another inline release cord is available, test the system with this new cord. If the controller works with the new cord, Microsoft may have to service the inline release cord. | | • | If another inline release cord is not available, examine the cord for any visible defects. If there is any physical damage, Microsoft may have to service the inline release cord. |
|
| 6. | Test the malfunctioning controller in all four controller ports. | • | If the controller works in some ports and not others, recheck the ports that failed the first time. If you confirm that a certain controller port is not working, Microsoft may have to repair the console. |
|
| 7. | If the controller does not work in any one of the ports, remove any discs from the disc tray and restart the Xbox console. When the console restarts, see if you can move to different screens in the dashboard. |
| 8. | If you cannot move to different screens in the dashboard, verify that you are using the original controller that came with the Xbox Video Game System. If you are not, switch to the original controller. |
| 9. | If no controllers work with the Xbox console, Microsoft may have to service the console. |
Note Sometimes the cable can become damaged or frayed at the point where it attaches to the controller. Typically, this problem occurs when the cable is wound tightly around the controller when it is stored. To avoid damaging the cable, do not wind the cable around the controller.
