MORE INFORMATION

To set up the MN-740 wireless adapter on the Xbox, you must perform the following three procedures:
1. Install the Xbox update (Live Now dashboard) with the disc included with the MN-740 wireless adapter.

Note If you went through the auto-update process when the dashboard was updated in September 2003, the updated dashboard may be installed already.
2. Connect the MN-740.
3. Configure the MN-740 settings.

Connecting the MN-740

To connect the Microsoft Xbox Wireless Adapter (MN-740):
1. Make sure that the Xbox console and any wireless networking devices (such as a router) are turned on.
2. Connect one end of the Ethernet cable (included with the MN-740) to the To Xbox port on the MN-470 adapter.
3. Connect the other end of the Ethernet cable to the Ethernet port on the Xbox console.
4. Plug one end of the power supply into the Power port on the MN-470 adapter, and then plug the other end into an electrical outlet.
5. Insert the Xbox wireless adapter setup disc into the disc tray of your Xbox. If the Xbox dashboard has not already been updated, it will be updated now. Setup detects wireless networks and displays them on the Select Network screen.

Note All the following steps involve the Xbox dashboard.

If the Select Network screen appears, and you want to connect to an existing network, select the network name. Setup detects many of the settings that the Xbox wireless adapter must have for connecting to that network. Continue to step 6.

If the Select Network screen appears, and you want to connect to an existing network, select the network name. Setup detects many of the settings that the Xbox wireless adapter must have for connecting to that network. Continue to step 6.

If the Select Network screen appears, and you want to set up the first Xbox console in a new System link connection, select Other, enter a network name on the Network Name screen, and then continue to step 6 on the next page. When you set up the second Xbox console, the network name that you specify will appear on the Select Network screen.

If the Select Network screen does not appear, and you want to connect to an existing network, try basic troubleshooting of your network devices.

If the Select Network screen does not appear, and you want to set up the first Xbox console in a new System link connection, continue to step 6 to specify and describe your wireless network.
6. On the Wireless Settings screen, enter information about your network.
If you are connecting to an existing network that you selected on the Select Network screen:
a. Specify the Security Type and Security Key if your network uses wireless security. Do not change any other settings on this screen.
b. The Xbox wireless adapter supports both 128-bit and 64-bit WEP. The security type and security key that you specify on your Xbox wireless adapter must match those specified on your other network devices.
If you are setting up the first Xbox console for system link (console-to-console) play:
a. Select Network Name to create a wireless network name (SSID). This name is case-sensitive. When you set up the wireless adapter on your second Xbox console, this name will appear on the Select Network screen.
b. Select Network Mode, and then specify the network mode as ad hoc 802.11b/g.
c. Select Channel to select a channel setting. When you set up your second Xbox wireless adapter, it will use the same channel.
d. Select Security Type to enable wireless security. Wireless security helps protect your wireless network from unauthorized access. 128-bit WEP is more secure than 64-bit WEP. Microsoft recommends using the highest security setting that is supported by your second wireless adapter. You must use the same security type on your second Xbox console.

Important WPA is not supported in the current release of the MN-740. Because the MN-740 does not currently support WPA, if you are using WPA on your base station, router, or gateway, you must switch to WEP on the base station (and on all the other devices on your network) to add the MN-740 adapter to your network.
e. If wireless security is enabled, select Security Key to specify a WEP key. For 128-bit WEP, use 26 characters; for 64-bit WEP, use 10. Use a combination of numbers and the letters A through F. You must use the same WEP key on your second Xbox console.
7. You must have an adapter password to install adapter updates. The password must contain no fewer than three characters and no more than 16. If you do not specify a password, you must use the default password, admin, to update your adapter. To update firmware, you must do so on a PC; you cannot update firmware through the Xbox alone.
8. When all available items on this screen display the settings that you want, select Save. The Wireless Status screen is displayed.
9. On the Wireless Status screen, check your wireless connection status:
If your adapter is correctly configured for the network, your connection status is Connected.
If your connection status appears as Not Connected, select Settings to review your wireless settings.
10. To confirm that the setup of your adapter was successful, use one of the following tests:
If you added your Xbox console to an existing network with a shared broadband Internet connection, start a game that is supported by Xbox Live. Make sure that you can access the Xbox Live service with your account.
If you connected two Xbox consoles, start a game that supports system link play. Use the System Link play option in the game, and make sure that you can play with the team that is using the other Xbox console.
If other Microsoft Broadband Networking products are installed on your network, start the Broadband Network Utility from a computer on your network. Make sure that your Xbox wireless adapter appears under Network Devices.
11. Select Back to exit the network area of the dashboard.

Configuring the MN-740

To configure the settings for the MN-740 wireless adapter:
Typically, if you are using an infrastructure network type, you can run the Xbox utility to configure your MN-740 wireless adapter automatically based on the network information that is broadcast to all the devices on the network.
If you are using an Ad-Hoc network type, however, you must configure the MN-740 wireless adapter manually. To do this: On the main wireless status screen, select Settings, and then use the information from your wireless network to enter the following:
Network Name
Network Mode
Channel
Security Type
Security Key
Password
For information about how to check the wireless network settings on your router, see your router documentation.
