Initial troubleshooting steps for Xbox Live connectivity on your Original Xbox console

This is article describes initial troubleshooting steps to use when experiencing difficulty connecting to Xbox LIVE by using an Original Xbox Console. Use this article when the Connect Status screen reports issues at one of the following phases:
Cables Connected?
IP Settings Configured?
DNS Resolved?
Connected to Xbox LIVE?

Xbox LIVE connectivity troubleshooting steps


The following section is the Xbox LIVE Connectivity Initial Troubleshooting Process.

If you have determined that you are experiencing an Xbox LIVE Connectivity issue, follow these steps:
1. Determine the type of connection that you are using. Which of the following connection types do you have?
Direct modem
Router
Wireless
Gateway
Windows Internet Connection Sharing
2. Power cycle all the hardware on the network. For more information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

3. Access the Connect Status screen in the Original Xbox Dashboard. Run the Connect Status test to find out where the connection is failing. Continue by following these steps:
a. Turn the Xbox Console on without a disk in the tray to reach the Xbox Dashboard.
b. Select Settings.
c. Select Network Settings.
d. Select Connect to test the Xbox LIVE Connection.
e. Determine the phase where the test fails.
f. If the Connect Status screen fails at the Connected to Xbox LIVE phase, check Xbox.com/support (http://www.xbox.com/support/) for any known Xbox LIVE outages. If there are no known outages, go to step 10.
g. Access the Diagnostic Server by selecting the Y button and then pressing the A button to continue to the diagnostic results. Document the results of Diagnostic Server before proceeding.
4. Determine if you have ever connected to Xbox LIVE. Follow these steps depending on the answer.
If you have connected to Xbox LIVE with your Original Xbox console before :
Check whether the Hardware and ISP provider are Xbox LIVE compatible.

If you have not connect to Xbox LIVE with your Original Xbox console before:
Check whether the hardware is Xbox LIVE compatible. View the following article in the Xbox Support Knowledge Base for a list of compatible hardware for your region:

If the hardware is compatible or not specifically listed as compatible or incompatible, go to the next step and check for an ISP outage.
5. Check your ISP for an outage. You can do this by confirming whether or not you can access the Internet from a computer on the same network.

Note If a computer is not available, contact your ISP to find out whether there a known outage.
If there is a known ISP outage, try connecting to Xbox LIVE again once the ISP outage has been resolved.
If there is no ISP outage, continue these steps.
6. Use Automatic network settings. If the Original Xbox Networking Settings are currently set to Manual, change the networking settings to Automatic. To change to Automatic settings, follow these steps:
a. On the Connect Status screen, select Settings.
b. Select IP Addresses.
c. Write down the current Manual IP Settings for future reference. Then select Configuration to change from Manual to Automatic. Select the B button to return to the Network Settings screen.
d. Select DNS Servers.
e. Copy the current manual Primary and Alternate DNS settings into your Scratch Pad. Then select Configuration to change from Manual to Automatic. Select the B button to return to the Network Settings screen.
7. Access the Connect Status screen again. Select the Connect button on the Network Settings screen. If the connection continues to fail, proceed to step 8 to make sure tthat your connection type is configured correctly.
8. Set up a new network. If you have ruled out aconnectivity variable, such as incompatible hardware or an Xbox LIVE or ISP outage, follow these steps:
a. If anything is obviously causing an issue, correct it.
b. Obtain Wireless Network settings if using wireless router/gateway.
c. Enter in Manual Settings using procedure in this section (if applicable)
d. Verify your networks settings again to ensure that they are correct.

Note Some ISPs require specific settings that may have to be entered into the Dashboard. For example: You have to enter static IP addresses and PPPoE settings in the Dashboard. If you have not been instructed by your ISP to modify any of these settings, skip this step.
To edit Network Settings in the Xbox Dashboard, follow these steps:
a. On the Connect Status screen, select Settings.
b. Select the setting type. You can enter manual settings for IP Address, DNS Servers, and PPPoE.
c. If you are entering a manual IP Address or DNS Settings, select Configuration to change the settings from Automatic to Manual. Then select the area and enter in the appropriate manual settings. If you are entering PPPoE settings, select Configuration to change the feature from Off to On and type the username, password, and service name. After all the settings have been entered, they will save automatically when you select the B button.
d. If you are using the wireless networking adapter, select Advanced on the Network Settings screen to modify wireless network settings.
9. Access the Connect Status screen again. If anything was changed since you last selected the Connect button on the Network Settings screen, select the Connect button to run the tests again. If the test fails, record the phase of the test at which it fails. Before leaving the Connect Status results screen, access the Diagnostic Server again by selecting the Y button and then press the A button to continue to the diagnostic results. Document the results of the Diagnostic Server before proceeding.
10. Based on where the Test Xbox LIVE Connection test had issues and the probing questions that you used to investigate the issue, select the following article in the Xbox Knowledge Base that best matches the issue and follow the appropriate troubleshooting steps:
