You cannot connect to Xbox LIVE. Then you try to perform the network test on the Test Xbox LIVE Connection screen. This test evaluates how your router or gateway will respond to a particular type of Internet Control Message Protocol (ICMP) packet. When you try to perform the network test on the Test Xbox LIVE Connection, the ICMP status displays as "Failed".

This behavior occurs when one of the following conditions is true:
| • | You're connecting to the Internet through a router or gateway that is not Xbox LIVE-compatible. |
| • | The router or in the gateway has the incorrect firmware installed. |

Before you try any of these methods, make sure that you power cycle all the devices on the network.

Connect directly to the modem
If you share a connection with a router or gateway and a modem, try a direct connection to the modem without the router.
Note This eliminates any router configuration problems.
To do this, follow these steps:
| 1. | Disconnect the Ethernet cable from the network device. |
| 2. | Disconnect the router from the modem. |
| 3. | Connect the Ethernet cable to the modem. |
| 4. | Try to perform the network test on the Test Xbox LIVE Connection screen. If the test works without the device, the device may be incompatible. You will want to determine whether or not your router or gateway is an Xbox LIVE-compatible device. Visit the following Xbox 360 Web site to see if the router or gateway is compatible: |
| 5. | If you have a compatible device, make sure that the router or the gateway device has the correct firmware version, by visiting the following Xbox 360 Web site: |

Make sure that your modem is compatible
If you are using a direct connection to a modem to the Internet, you should not experience this behavior.
However, if you do experience this behavior, verify that your modem is an Xbox LIVE-compatible device. To determine whether or not your modem is an Xbox 360-compatible device, visit the following Xbox 360 Web site:
If your broadband device is not listed as being Xbox LIVE-compatible, you will want to replace it with one that is Xbox LIVE-compatible.

Update the firmware for your broadband device
If you are using an Xbox LIVE-compatible device, you should not experience this behavior. But if you do experiencing this behavior, visit the following Web site to see whether the broadband device has the correct firmware version that has been certified as Xbox 360-compatible:
