Change, Save, and Remove Your Windows Live ID Password

When you sign up for Xbox LIVE, you associate your Xbox LIVE account with a Windows Live ID. You use this Windows Live ID on your console to manage your account, recover your profile, and sign in to services like Windows Live Messenger.

To protect your account, you can change the password for your Windows Live ID on your console. You can also save your password to speed up signing into Messenger.

Change Your Password

It is recommended that you periodically change the password for your Windows Live ID.

To change your Windows Live ID password

  1. Go to My Xbox and select your profile.
  2. Select Manage Account.
  3. Select Windows Live ID.
  4. Select Change Password.
  5. Enter your current password, enter your new password twice to confirm, then select Change Now. If you want to store the password for services like Windows Live Messenger, select Yes when prompted.

Save or Remove Your Password

When you start Windows Live Messenger on your console, it uses your Windows Live ID to sign in. You can save your password on the console so that you don't have to sign in every time you use the service.

You are asked if you want to save your Windows Live ID password when you sign up for Messenger or when you change your password.

Note

A saved password is used only for services like Windows Live Messenger. You still have to enter your password when managing your account.

If you no longer want to store the password on your console, you can remove it. If you remove your saved Windows Live ID password from the console, you'll have to enter it every time you sign in to Messenger on Xbox LIVE.

To remove your Windows Live ID password

  1. Go to My Xbox and select your profile.
  2. Select Manage Account.
  3. Select Windows Live ID.
  4. Select Remove Password.
