Sometimes your network equipment can get itself into a strange state for no apparent reason. If you're having trouble connecting to Xbox LIVE, simply restarting your equipment could be the solution. Restarting your modem, router, and other network devices (also called "power-cycling") solves about 50 percent of cases in which players aren't able to connect to Xbox LIVE.

Restarting Your Equipment
The best way to restart your network equipment is to power down all devices between the wall jack and your console, wait a few minutes, then turn them back on, in order, from the wall jack out.
For example, if you have a modem and a router, you'd turn off (or unplug) your modem, router, and console, then turn on your modem, wait a few minutes, then your router, wait a few minutes, and then your console.
Your network equipment may include:
- Modem (cable or DSL)
- Router (wired or wireless)
- Gateway
- PC (if using Windows ICS)
Your network is not likely to include all of these devices. Most home networks just have a modem, or a modem and a router. The modem and router might also be together in one piece of equipment. If you're not using Windows ICS to share your connection, your PC doesn't need to be restarted as a part of this process.
To restart your network equipment:
- Turn off your console and your network equipment. If your equipment doesn't have a power button, disconnect it from power.
- Wait three minutes.
- Turn on the first piece of equipment from the wall, usually the modem. Wait for the modem to fully come online (a few minutes is a safe bet), indicated by lights on the front of the modem.
- If there's another piece of equipment after that one (for example, a router), turn it on, and wait for it to come online (a few more minutes).
- Repeat step 4 for any additional equipment.
- Turn on your console.
- In the Xbox Dashboard, go to My Xbox and open System Settings.
- Select Network Settings, Test Xbox LIVE Connection.
If the test failed, the problem is probably something different. Follow the suggestions on the console or see Network Help for more help.
