Use content limits on Xbox One when no one is signed in

If you’ve set up a guest account, or are using a guest key, you can limit what guests can see and do on your Xbox One console when no one is signed in. These settings can be changed by any adult who is signed in on the console.

You can set up the following security settings to manage the games and apps your guests can use when no one is signed in to the Xbox Live service:

  • Prevent access to inappropriate content
  • Block explicit TV
  • Restrict the ability to add or create accounts on the console

Note Guests won’t be able to use games and apps that require sign-in.

Guest keys

Xbox One allows the use of a guest key to override guest account restrictions. If a guest tries to access games and apps rated higher than the guest account’s settings allow, the console prompts for the guest key, which will allow your guest to override these restrictions if you have provided them the key.

Guest keys are useful when:

  • You don’t want your children or teens to sign out and use content that’s above the maturity level you’ve approved.
  • You want to be sure the sitter doesn’t allow the kids to play an age-inappropriate game.
  • You live with roommates who you don’t want to sign in to your console when you’re not home.

To manage these restrictions, you’ll need to create a guest key. The guest key is a 6-digit code that you set up on your console. Only those people who have the guest key can make changes.

Note Guest keys can only be managed by an adult and only on the Xbox One console.

Grant access to content and apps

After you create your guest key, you can set parameters around what content can be viewed on your Xbox One when no one is signed in.

  1. Select System > Settings > System > Signed-out content restrictions.
  2. Select Access to content.
  3. Open the Access to content & apps drop-down menu and scroll down to select the age-appropriate content level you want to allow your guests to use. Age-appropriate ratings are determined by your location. A description of what is available at each age level is shown on the right of the screen. Press the B button on your controller when finished.

By default, your console allows new accounts to be downloaded or created when no one is signed in to the console. To block this feature:

  1. Select System > Settings > System > Signed-out content restrictions.
  2. Select Access to content.
  3. Make sure that the Let people download & make new accounts option is not selected.
