Error 80072f78 occurs when you try to sign in to Xbox Live

You see the following error message when you try to download your Xbox LIVE profile on your Xbox 360 console:

Sorry, Xbox LIVE profiles can't be downloaded right now. Please try again later.

    80072f78

This may mean either of the following:

    • There’s a problem with your profile.
    • There’s a problem with the information in your Microsoft account.

    Solutions

You’ll need to know the email address and password associated with your account to complete these steps. If you don’t know your Microsoft account information, see Find your Microsoft email address or password.

    Solution 1: Re-download your profile

To resolve this issue, redownload your profile. Here's how:

    1. Press the Guide button on your controller.
    2. Select Download Profile.

Note Not seeing Download Profile? Press X to sign out of your profile.

    1. Enter the Microsoft email address associated with your Xbox Live gamertag.
    2. Enter your Microsoft account password.

Note If your account is an Xbox Live child account, the parent’s Microsoft account information is required to download the profile.

    1. Select the storage device for your profile (for example, Hard Drive).

Your profile will begin downloading. Once your profile has downloaded, you can choose whether or not you want to require your Microsoft account password to sign in to your profile.

If this doesn’t resolve the issue, try the following solution.

Solution 2: Delete the corrupted profile stored on your Xbox console and then download your profile again

To delete the corrupted profile that’s stored on your Xbox console, follow these steps:

    1. Go to Settings and then select System.
    2. Select Storage.
    3. Select All Devices.
    4. Select Profiles.
    5. Select the gamertag that you want to delete.
    6. Select Delete.
    7. Select Delete Profile Only. This deletes the profile but leaves saved games and achievements.
    8. Download your profile again:
      1. Press the Guide button on your controller.
      1. Select Download Profile.

Note If you don’t see Download Profile, it probably means that you’re signed in. Press X to sign out of your profile.
      1. Enter the Microsoft account that’s associated with your Xbox Live gamertag.

Note If your account is an Xbox Live child account, you have to use the parent’s Microsoft account to download the profile.
      1. Select the storage device for your profile (for example, Hard Drive).

After your profile has downloaded, you can choose whether to require a Microsoft account password to sign in to your profile.

If this doesn’t resolve the issue, try the following solution.

Solution 3: Clear the system cache

To resolve this issue, clear the system cache. Here's how:

    1. Press the Guide button on your controller.
    2. Go to Settings and select System Settings.
    3. Select Storage or Memory.
    4. Highlight any storage device, and then press Y on your controller. (It doesn't matter which storage device you select; the cache will be cleared for all storage devices.)
    5. Select Clear System Cache.
    6. When prompted to confirm storage device maintenance, select Yes.

If this doesn’t resolve the issue, try the following solution.

Solution 4: Verify the information for your Microsoft Account

To resolve this issue, verify the information for your Microsoft account. To do this, follow these steps:

    1. Sign in to your Microsoft account.

Note If you have forgotten your password or can’t sign in by using your password, see Reset your password.

    1. Note any error messages that are displayed.
    2. After you resolve any errors, verify the information for your Microsoft account. For example, verify the billing information or the information in the Password and security info section.
    3. Sign out of your Microsoft account and then sign in again.
    4. Sign in to Xbox Live and try to download your profile again.

If you keep experiencing the problem, contact Xbox Support.
