Troubleshoot sound on your Xbox One console

If you've made a change to your home entertainment system, made a change to your Xbox One Display & sound settings, or just set up your console for the first time and have no sound, try the following solutions.

    Simple solutions

    • Check that the TV audio is not muted and is at a reasonable volume.
    • Verify that your external or built-in TV speakers are properly connected and turned on.

Check your TV and HDMI connections

    1. Press the Xbox button to open the guide.
    2. Select Settings.
    3. Select All Settings.
    4. Select Display & sound.
    5. Select Video output.
    6. Select TV connection.
    7. If TV connection is set to "DVI," you'll need an optical audio cable for sound. If you're using an HDMI cable, switch your TV connection to "Auto-detect."
Note If your screen goes dark after you select HDMI or DVI and the screen doesn't reset after 30 seconds, see Troubleshooting a blank TV or monitor while your Xbox One is on.
    8. Back out of Video output by pressing B .
    9. Select Audio output.
    10. Verify that HDMI audio is not set to “Off” (or dimmed).

Rebalance sound when you can hear only one visible app

Check that the sound balance bar is not pushed completely to one side:

    1. Press the Xbox button to open the guide.
    2. Select Settings.
    3. Select All Settings.
    4. Select Display & sound.
    5. Select Volume.
    6. Select Sound mixer.
    7. Move the bar to the desired blend between the main window and your snapped app.

Troubleshoot when game or app audio becomes inaudible during voice chat

If your active game or app becomes quiet or inaudible when you're using Kinect in party chat or on a Skype call, your Chat mixer may be set to focus only on the conversation. To adjust the level of sound while communicating, adjust the Chat mixer settings:

    1. Press the Xbox button to open the guide.
    2. Select Settings.
    3. Select All Settings.
    4. Select Display & sound.
    5. Select Volume.
    6. Select Chat mixer.
    7. Select one of the available options.

Troubleshooting sound issues with an audio-video receiver

If your Xbox One console is connected to an audio-visual receiver that's connected to your television and you have no sound, follow these troubleshooting steps:

    1. Turn on your devices in the following order. Wait for each device to fully power up before starting the next device:
      1. Television
      2. Audio-video receiver
      3. Xbox One console
    2. Use the “Input” button on your television's remote control (or the buttons on the television) to switch the input source of your receiver away from the console and then back (for example, HDMI1 to HDMI2, then back to HDMI1).
    3. Restart the audio-video receiver.
    4. Set your TV connection to HDMI:
      1. Press the Xbox button to open the guide.
      2. Select Settings.
      3. Select All Settings.
      4. Select Display & sound.
      5. Select Video output.
      6. Select TV Connection.
      7. Select HDMI.
