Error C00D11CC occurs when trying to install the Zune software

Note As of November 15, 2015, the Zune service has been discontinued. This may cause errors when attempting to stream or download content or update the service.

You get the following error when you try to install the Zune software:

Error code C00D11C

This may mean that the installation was not successful.

Solution

To install the Zune software, follow these steps.

Note You can also use the Zune Installation Wizard to install the software.

  1. Perform a clean startup.
    1. Click Start, click Run, type msconfig, and then click OK. You may be prompted for an administrator password or confirmation.

      For Windows 8: From the Start screen, start typing msconfig. When the icon to open the window appears on your screen, click or tap it.

    2. On the General tab, select Selective startup.

      For Windows XP: Clear the Process SYSTEM.INI file, Process WIN.INI file, and Load startup items check boxes.

    3. On the Services tab, select the Hide all Microsoft services check box, click or tap Disable all, and then click or tap OK.
    4. Click or tap Restart to restart your computer.
  2. Remove the Zune software from your computer.
    1. After your computer turns on, make sure that no devices are connected to your computer.
    2. Click Start, click Run, type appwiz.cpl, and then click OK.

      For Windows 8: From the Start screen, start typing appwiz.cpl. When the icon to open the window appears on your screen, click or tap it.

    3. Select Zune from the list, click or tap Uninstall (click Remove on Windows XP), and then click Yes.
    4. If any of the following applications appear in the list, uninstall them as well:
      • Microsoft User-Mode Driver Framework Feature Pack 1.0
      • Windows Driver Package - Microsoft WPD
      • Windows Media Format 11 SDK
      • Windows Portable Devices

      Note Don’t remove the software if you receive an error message that says there are program dependencies blocking the removal of any of these software applications.

    5. Delete your Zune program file folder. Open drive C on your computer, and then open the Program Files folder. You may need to click Show the contents of this folder to view the list of files.

      To open drive C on Windows 8: From the Start screen, start typing computer. When the icon to open the window appears on your screen, click or tap it. You’ll see drive C.

    6. Right-click or swipe the Zune folder, and then select Delete.
    7. Empty the Windows temp folder.
      1. Click Start, click Run, type %temp%, and then click OK.

        For Windows 8: From the Start screen, start typing run. When the icon to get the Run window appears on your screen, click or tap it.

      2. Select all contents of the temporary folder for deletion.
      3. Click or tap the arrow next to Organize, and then click or tap Select All.
      4. Click or tap Organize again, and then click or tap Delete from the dropdown list.

        For Windows XP: Click Edit, click Select All, click File, and then click Delete.

      5. When you’re prompted to send items to the Recycle Bin, click Yes.
    8. Reinstall the Zune software.
      1. When the Run dialog box appears, select Run to run it right away or select Save to save it to your desktop.

      During the installation, you are prompted to connect your device.

    9. Reconfigure your computer for a typical setup.
      • Click Start, click Run, type msconfig, and then click OK. You may be prompted for an administrator password or for confirmation.

        For Windows 8: From the Start screen, start typing msconfig. When the icon to open the window appears on your screen, click or tap it.

      1. On the General tab, select Normal startup, and then click or tap OK.
      2. Restart your computer.

      Your Zune software should now be successfully installed.
