Use game transcription on Xbox One

Game transcription converts in-game player speech to text that you can read on the screen. It can also read chat text that you type to other players aloud.

Note Game transcription is available on Xbox One and Windows 10 in games that support it. The following games currently support this feature:

Halo Wars 2

If you’re playing Halo Wars 2, all profiles that will be using game transcription will need to follow these in-game steps:

  1. Launch Halo Wars 2.
  2. In Main Menu, select Options & Extras > Game.
  3. Set the Enable ease of access shortcuts option to On.
  4. Join other Ease of Access users by either accepting a Game Invite or using the Join Game option.

To use the Ease of Access shortcuts in Halo Wars 2:

  1. For speech-to-text, press RT + R3 (Xbox One) or O key (Windows 10) to open the chat transcription text box. The text box will open automatically if voice chat is received and will stay open for 5 to 10 seconds before closing.
  2. For text-to-speech, press RT + L3 (Xbox One) or Shift + K (Windows 10) to open the virtual keyboard. Messages will be read aloud through the receiving person’s headphones or speakers, and will display as a text message in the chat transcription text box.

Troubleshooting

If you’re having trouble using game transcription in Halo Wars 2, here are some suggestions:

  • Make sure everyone using game transcription has connected a headset before launching the game.
  • Check your privacy settings (this applies to everyone using game transcription).
    • On Xbox One, press the Xbox button  to open the guide, select System > Settings, and then select Account > Privacy & online safety > Xbox Live privacy > View details & customize > Communication & multiplayer. Under Others can communicate with voice, text, or invites, choose Everybody. Press the B button to go back to Xbox Live privacy, and then select Online status & history. Under Others can see if you’re online, choose Everybody.
    • On Windows 10, sign in to Xbox privacy & online safety. In the Privacy tab, scroll down to Others can communicate with voice, text, or invites and See if you’re online, choose Everybody for both, and then select Save.
  • If you can hear voice chat but can’t receive speech-to-text, everyone using game transcription should restart the game.
