Error 8C020007 occurs when you are required to change your gamertag

Problem

You see the following error message when you’re required to change your gamertag using your Xbox 360 console:

Sorry, there's a problem with the Xbox service. Try again later. For help with this problem, go to www.xbox.com/errorhelp.

Status code: 8C020007

This means that a problem is preventing you from changing your gamertag on your console after you receive a Forced Gamertag Change request.

Solution

To resolve this problem, sign in to your Xbox Live account. After you sign in, you’ll be prompted to change your existing gamertag to a new one. You won’t be charged for this change.

If you’re not prompted to select a new gamertag when you sign in to your Xbox console, follow these steps:

  1. Select Sign in in the upper right corner of any Xbox.com webpage, such as this one.
  2. Enter your Microsoft account credentials, and then select Sign in.
  3. Select My Account.
  4. Select Change my gamertag.
  5. Enter a new gamertag, and then select Check Availability.
  6. To claim the gamertag, select Claim It!.
