Updating your Xbox One console

We're constantly improving Xbox One. If your console is set up to get automatic updates, we'll update your console when one is available. If not, you'll be prompted to update.

Automatic updates

To set your console to automatically receive updates:

  1. Press the Xbox button  to open the guide.
  2. Select System > Settings.
  3. Select System > Updates & downloads.
  4. Select Keep my console up to date for console and Keep my games & apps up to date for games & apps.

Manual updates

If you want to get the update manually:

  1. Make sure your console is connected to the internet, and then press the Xbox button  to open the guide.
  2. Select System > Settings.
  3. Select System > Updates & downloads.
  4. In the top box on the left column, you’ll see:
    • Update available. Select this button to begin your update, or
    • No console update available. This means your console is up to date.

If no update is available, your console is up to date.

What version do I have?

To see your console's system version:

  1. Press the Xbox button  to open the guide.
  2. Select System > Settings.
  3. Select System > Console info.
  4. Your OS version is displayed in the second column.

Note If you’re in the middle of a system update and need to find your operating system version on your console, pull both the left and right triggers and both the left and right bumpers on your controller at the same time. The operating system version is listed as Build and is the second line down.

To learn what new features or updates went into each release, see Xbox One operating system versions and system updates.

Xbox Insider Program

If you're in the Xbox Insider Program, your console may update more frequently as we prepare a new update for public release. We may also do preview updates in waves. Some Xbox Insider participants may receive updates at different times than others.

If you're interested in helping us through the preview program, see Xbox Insider Program FAQ.
