Forza Motorsport 5 uses a new system of driver avatars called drivatars to power single-player races. The game learns the driving style of each individual player as they race on different tracks, and builds an artificial intelligence (AI) drivatar for each player. When you start a single-player race, Forza Motorsport 5 uses drivatars from your friends and other Xbox Live players to populate your opponents.
When you see your friend’s gamertag coming up behind you during a single-player race, it’s really just their drivatar.
