Set up and manage a guest key on your Xbox One console

When no one is signed in on your Xbox One, you can use a 6-digit guest key to allow access to content. For example, if the house sitter who’ll be staying at your place while you're on vacation doesn’t have their own Xbox Live account, leave them the guest key.

Note A guest key is different from a guest account. A guest key is a reusable passcode that allows guests to use your console without requiring you to be signed in. A temporary guest account can only be created while you’re signed in and is deleted as soon as you or your guest signs out.

Create a guest key

  1. Press the Xbox button to open the guide.
  2. Select Settings > System > Signed-out content restrictions.
  3. Select Create a guest key.
  4. Use your controller to create a 6-digit passcode. Be sure to use something you'll remember but that can't be guessed by others.
  5. Enter the passkey again to confirm.

Remove a guest key

If you decide you no longer want to restrict what guests can view on your console when you're not signed in, or if you want to allow guests to add their own Xbox profile, you can simply remove the guest key you created.

  1. Press the Xbox button to open the guide.
  2. Select Settings > System > Signed-out content restrictions.
  3. Select Remove guest key.
  4. Enter the guest key to remove it.

Change a guest key

To change the guest key on your Xbox One console, you’ll first need to remove the existing guest key. Any content restrictions you put in place using your existing guest key will be erased, so you’ll need to set them again when you create the new key.

Follow the steps to remove a guest key, and then create a new guest key.

Forgot your guest key?

A forgotten guest key can be reset by any adult, as long as that person knows their Microsoft account password and is signed in on the console.

  1. Follow the steps to remove a guest key.
  2. When you’re prompted to enter the guest key, enter an incorrect key three times, and then enter your Microsoft account password to remove the guest key.
  3. If you want to create a new guest key, select Create a guest key and follow the steps.

Note If you forgot your password, select I forgot my password, and then follow the instructions.

To set content restrictions so you can limit what guests can see and do on your Xbox One console, see Use content limits on Xbox One when no one is signed in.
